Front Disc Brake Pads (Armored Vehicles)
Brake Pads
Removal
WARNING: Brake pads must be renewed in axle sets only, otherwise braking efficiency may be impaired. If pad wear warning light has been activated, the pad wear sensor must be renewed.
CAUTION: The brake caliper is aligned/centralized to the brake disc when the vehicle is built. The vehicle may have shims fitted between the brake caliper anchor plate and the wheel knuckle. Care must be taken not to disturb this alignment. When removing the caliper; remove only the bolts that secure the brake caliper to the brake caliper anchor plate. DO NOT loosen any other caliper bolts. This alignment/centralization MUST be checked/set when the wheel knuckle is replaced. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the vehicle.
1
WARNING: Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.
Raise front of the vehicle.
2 Remove the road wheels.
3 LH side only: Release pad wear sensor.
4
CAUTION: Do not allow caliper to hang on brake hose.
Remove the 2 socket head screws securing the caliper to the mounting bracket and tie the caliper aside.
5 Remove brake pads from caliper housing, mark their fitted position if they are to be refitted.
6 Repeat procedure for the brake pads on the other front caliper.
Installation
1
WARNING: Do not use compressed air to clean brake components. Dust from friction materials can be harmful if inhaled.
Clean caliper housing and caliper carrier using brake cleaning fluid.
2 Clean brake pad, caliper housing and carrier contact areas and apply suitable anti-seize compound.
3 Inspect caliper and seals for damage.
4 Slacken bleed screw cover retaining screws and move cover to give access to bleed screws.
5 Position bleed bottle, connect bleed hose to bleed screw and loosen screw.
6 Press piston into caliper housing then tighten bleed screw to 14 Nm (10 lbf.ft). Repeat procedure on remaining bleed screw.
7 Disconnect bleed hose and remove bottle.
8 Reposition bleed screw cover to shield bleed screw and tighten retaining screws to 5 Nm (3.6 lbf.ft).
9 Fit brake pads to caliper housing.
10 Inspect the caliper mounting screws for damage, corrosion or wear and renew if necessary.
11 Apply Loctite (blue) to mounting screws threads.
12 Fit caliper mounting screws and tighten them to 108 Nm, (79 lbf.ft).
13 Repeat procedure for other side.
14 LH side only: Fit pad wear sensor.
15 Depress brake pedal several times to position the pads in the caliper.
16 Check and top-up fluid level.
17 Fit the front road wheels and tighten nuts to 140 Nm (103 lbf.ft).
18 Remove the stands and lower the vehicle.
