Electrical - MIL ON/No CAN Communication/Stuck In Park

SUBJECT: OPTIMA (QF) MIL - NO CAN COMMUNICATION (ACU GROUND CONNECTION)

This bulletin provides information related to an electrical ground improvement on the floor harness. On some 2012MY Optima vehicles built prior to 11/5/2011 the GDS intermittently may not communicate with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) several instrument panel indicator lights maybe ON and the transmission gear selector may not come out of park. To correct this condition and restore proper CAN Communication remove the excess electrical tape from the ground eyelet and/or paint from the ground stud at (GF05) located at the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) under the center console.





1. Verify No Communication with GDS

If normal GDS communication is verified, diagnose any other concerns according to service information on KGIS.

If CAN Communication is not possible proceed to Step 2

*NOTICE
Record customers radio stations before disconnecting battery.





2. Remove negative cable terminal from battery.





3. Remove interior trim panels indicated in photo to access floor wiring harness.

Remove driver-side and passenger-side center console panels





4. Remove screws from driver and passenger side of center console.





5. Remove gear shift handle by pulling it upward.





6. Remove console upper cover assembly and disconnect connectors.





7. Remove screw attaching the center console to gear shifter.





8. Remove screws attaching forward portion of the center console to the crashpad.





9. Remove the contents inside the center console and remove the bolts located on the bottom.





10. Lean the drivers and passenger seats back and remove the side screws from the center console.





11. Remove center console assembly by lifting the rear section upward and sliding it back in locating the ground.

*NOTICE
Move upper console connectors to the right-hand side to help aid in locating the ground.





12. Locate the ACU (forward of yaw rate sensor) and remove the floor wiring harness ground nut.





13. Inspect the floor harness ground terminal for excess tape under eyelet and trim tape back to red line in photo. Be sure to remove any paint from stud. This step is critical to promote proper grounding

Ground nut torque spec: 5.2 - 6.6 Ft-Lb.





14. Reinstall components in reverse order of removal. Reconnect the negative battery cable terminal and reprogram radio station presets as recorded in step 2.

*NOTICE
Be sure to install the center console guide tabs when installing center console.

Verify proper CAN Communication check shifter and warning lamp operation.
