SERVICE CAMPAIGN: AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT (ACU) REPROGRAM (SC 081)

This Service Bulletin provides information relating to an upgrade of the functioning of the logic in the Airbag Control Unit in some 2010MY Forte 4 door vehicles, with production dates ranging from March 3, 2009 through January 11, 2010, to increase the range of impacts in which the side and curtain airbags will deploy. This upgrade will bring these vehicles in line with current Forte production. The ACU logic in these vehicles is in compliance with all governmental safety standards.

This bulletin provides information on how to reprogram the Forte ACU. Please follow the service procedure outlined below.

All vehicles potentially subject to this campaign should be verified to be not completed. WebDCS > Warranty Coverage > Warranty Coverage Inquiry > Check Open Campaign Status.

Inspection Procedure:





Open the hood and check for SC 081 campaign completion label on the passenger side strut tower. If label exist, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.

If label does not exist, continue to step (1) of the ECM Upgrade Procedure until completion.

NOTICE
^ A fully charged battery is necessary before ECU upgrade can take place. DO NOT connect a battery charger to the vehicle during ECU upgrade. Make sure the blower motor is "OFF" during ECU upgrade.

^ All ECU upgrades must be done with the ignition key in the "ON" position.

^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or GDS during the ECU upgrade procedure.

^ DO NOT start the engine during ECU upgrade.

^ DO NOT turn the ignition key "OFF" or interrupt the power supply during ECU upgrade.

^ When the ECU upgrade is completed, turn the ignition key "OFF" and wait 20 seconds before starting the engine.

^ ONLY use approved ECU upgrade software designated for the correct model, year and engine size. Failure to do so may create other driveability issues due to the use of the incorrect ECM/PCM calibration.





ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE:





AUTOMATIC ECM UPGRADE PROCEDURE USING THE GDS:

1. Connect the power supply cable to the GDS tool.

2. Connect the USB cable between the VCI and the GDS tool.

3. Connect the main 16-pin DLC cable from the VCI into the vehicle's 16-pin connector under the driver's side instrument panel.

4. Turn on VCI and GDS tool with the ignition key in the ON position.

Do NOT start the engine.

5. Select VIN or ECU Upgrade on the initial screen.





6. Enter the vehicle information by pressing the VIN Auto Detect button, entering the vehicle's VIN or selecting the vehicle model, model year, engine/fuel type, and AIRBAG as the system and then click OK.

7. Select ECU Upgrade on the initial screen after entering the vehicle information.

8. Select Auto Mode then AIRBAG in the left ECU Upgrade column.

9. Read Preparation and click OK.

10. The GDS will read the vehicle's ROM ID.

11. After the Current ROM ID is displayed, select appropriate Upgrade Event, "118.TD ACU UPDATE."

12. After clicking the Upgrade button, read Information then click OK.

13. The vehicle battery voltage is checked to make sure it is at least 12 volts to assure reliable upgrade results. Click OK if the results indicate Voltage is OK.

14. Upgrade will begin and the progress of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph.

15. Upgrade will occur until 100% is reached on the bar graph. Turn the ignition key OFF for 10 seconds, place it back in the ON position and then click OK to continue according to Information displayed on the screen.





16. Click OK on the final screen, which indicates when upgrade is completed.

17. Clear any DTCs that were created during the upgrade process.





18. After the completion of reprogramming, open the hood and affix the SC081 campaign completion label to the passenger side strut tower.

Manual Mode Upgrade Procedure Using The GDS:

NOTICE:
Do NOT attempt to perform a Manual Mode upgrade unless Auto Mode fails. Always follow the instructions given on the GDS tool in either Auto or Manual mode. See table for Manual Mode password.





1. Select Manual Mode within ECU Upgrade screen; then select Upgrade Event # 118. TD ACU UPDATE; then select TD ACU: 95910-1M100 and click OK.





2. Enter password from the table above.

3. Upgrade will begin and the process of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph.

NOTICE:
If battery voltage drops below 12 volts, check Cancel and charge battery to assure adequate state of charge for reliable upgrade results.

4. Upgrade will occur until 100% is reached on the bar graph. Turn the ignition key OFF for 10 seconds, then back to ON position and click OK to continue according to information displayed on the screen.





5. Click OK on the final screen, which indicates when upgrade is complete.

Clear any DTCs that were created during the upgrade process.

6. Refer to Step 18 in the Automatic ECM Upgrade Procedure in regard to SC081 Campaign Completion Label placement.
