Subject 2005-2009 Spectra (LD) - Evaporative Emissions Canister Air Filter Scheduled Maintenance

- Description

Spectra model vehicles which are driven under severe duty operating environments must have the fuel tank filter replaced as part of the severe maintenance interval every 24 months or 30,000 miles. This severe maintenance interval applies to vehicles which are regularly driven over dirt roads on in an unusually dusty environment. Inspect the vehicle on a lift and if there is an accumulation of dirt and debris around the vehicle undercarriage and evaporative emissions canister, the canister air filter element may become restricted prior to normal service duty intervals. Failure to replace an air filter which is becoming restricted due to dirt or contamination may result in a MIL light concern and DTC P0449, due to insufficient airflow volume through the filter during venting of the evaporative emissions system. In addition, the filter capacity has been increased on the latest air filter design to increase filter service life under severe duty conditions. newer part number 31453 2F501 has an increased case dimension however it is interchangeable with the earlier part.

NOTE:
If you encounter a vehicle with a contaminated fuel tank filter, it is not necessary to replace the complete canister assembly. Replace only the affected air filter part shown below.

New air filter design with improved filtration capacity can be distinguished from the old level part by increased size of the cross section of the case.
