2009 MY Optima A/T Paddle Shifter Introduction

Description:

2009 MY Optima (SX) 2.4L/2.7L vehicles built after 12/15/2008 and equipped with the five-speed automatic transmission now come with Kia's first steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. The paddle shifters allow the driver to shift gears without removing their hands from the steering wheel.

When the gear selector lever is placed in the manual shift gate or (D) Drive Position, the paddle shifters or gear selector will enable manual shift mode. Shift ranges can be selected by moving the gear selector up or down, or by pulling the steering wheel mounted right-side or left-side paddle shifters. To shift up, a driver can move the gear selector to the (+) position or pull the right-side paddle to engage a higher gear range. To down shift, a driver can move the gear selector to the (-) position or pull the left-side paddle to engage a lower gear range. To cancel the operation of the manual shift mode, return the gear selector to the (D) Drive position or discontinue the use of the steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

The addition of the shifter paddle shifters require a minor change in the body electrical wiring for the clock-spring and gear selector manual shift inputs (Illustration 1 & 2).
