COMBINED TSB / SERVICE ACTION: TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) RECEIVER UPGRADE - CHANGE OF TPMS SOFTWARE (SA049)
KMA is conducting a Service Action in relation to some 2008MY Sportage (KM), Spectra (LD), Rio (JB) vehicles with "low-line" Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). See Production Date Range Chart. Some vehicles may experience illumination of the TPMS warning lamp indicating that there is a problem with the TPMS system. This bulletin provides information relating to Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) receiver software upgrade for these vehicles. The upgrade procedure as outlined below will correct this condition.
To improve customer satisfaction, Kia is requesting the completion of this Service Action on all affected 2008 Sportage (KM), Spectra (LD), Rio (JB) vehicles.
For vehicles not on the list, but with a customer concern; perform the following procedure outlined in this bulletin and submit a warranty claim per "customer concern" (Standard TSB) claim information.
NOTICE
To verify the vehicle is affected, be sure to check the version of the vehicle's control unit ROM ID with reference to the ROM ID Information table before attempting to upgrade the control unit software.
To correct this condition, the ECU should be reprogrammed using the GDS download as described in this bulletin.
NOTICE
A Service Action is a repair program without customer notification that is performed during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the warranty period will require DPMS approval.
Repair status for a VIN is provided on WebDCS (Service > Warranty Coverage > Warranty Coverage Inquiry > Campaign Information). Not completed Recall / Service Action reports are available on WebDCS (Consumers Affairs > Not Completed Recall > Recall VIN > Select Report), which includes a list of affected vehicles.
This issue number is SA049.
Service Procedure
NOTICE:
^ A fully charged battery is necessary before ECU upgrade can take place. DO NOT connect a battery charger to the vehicle during ECU upgrade. Make sure the blower motor is "OFF" during ECU upgrade.
^ All ECU upgrades must be done with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or GDS during the ECU upgrade procedure.
^ DO NOT start the engine during ECU upgrade.
^ DO NOT turn the ignition key "OFF" or interrupt the power supply during ECU upgrades.
^ When the ECU upgrade is completed, turn the ignition key "OFF" and wait 20 seconds before starting the engine.
^ ONLY use approved ECU upgrade software designed for the correct model, year and engine size. Failure to do so may create other driveability issues due to the use of the incorrect ECM/PCM calibration.
ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE
To verify the vehicle is affected, be sure to check the calibration Identification of the vehicle's ECM's ROM ID and reference the Information table as necessary.
1. Connect the power supply cable to the GDS tool.
NOTICE
If attempting to perform the ECU upgrade with the power supply cable disconnected from the GDS tool, be sure to check that the GDS tool is fully charged before ECU upgrade. If the GDS tool is not fully charged, failure to perform the ECU upgrade may occur. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the power supply connector be connected to the GDS tool.
2. Connect the USB cable between the VCI and the GDS tool.
3. Connect the 16-pin DLC cable from the VCI into the vehicle's 16-pin connector under the driver side instrument panel.
4. Turn on the VCI and diagnostic terminal with the ignition key in the ON position.
NOTICE
DO NOT start the engine.
Software Upgrade Procedure (only manual upgrade mode)
1. Choose VIN or ECU Upgrade on the initial screen.
Enter the vehicle information by pressing the VIN Auto Detect button, entering the vehicle's VIN or selecting the vehicle model, model year, engine/fuel type and TPMS as the system and then click ok.
2. Within the ECU Upgrade screen, select Manual Mode in the left column, then select the appropriate 131.TPMS RECEIVER S/W UPDATE. Select the appropriate control unit part number with reference to the ROM ID Information Table and click OK.
3. Enter the password from the table below, and then click OK.
4. Upgrade will begin and the progress of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph.
Upgrade will occur after 100% is reached on the bar graph. turn the ignition key OFF for 10 seconds, place it back in the ON position and then click OK to continue according to information displayed on the screen.
5. Click OK on the final screen, which indicates upgrade has successfully finished.
6. Check if any incidental Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) have been created by the upgrade, and clear DTC(s) if necessary.
