VOLUNTARY SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN

SUBJECT:
OPTIMA (MO) A/T SHIFT CABLE INSPECTION (SC088)





This bulletin provides information relating to the inspection of the A/T shift cable on certain 2006-2008 model year Optima (MG) vehicles produced from September 29, 2005 through June 13, 2007. Some of these vehicles may have the A/T shift cable installed incorrectly causing tension in the cable. This condition could cause the cable to detach from the shifter assembly's dowel pin preventing the transmission from being shifted. If the A/T shift cable is found to be installed incorrectly the A/T shift cable bushing will need to be replaced before reinstalling the shift cable in the correct position.

Inspection Procedure:





1. Remove the center console cover (A).





2. Check that the A/T shift cable is installed correctly (arrow). It the cable is found to be installed correctly (saw-edged projections facing up) no further action is required. Reinstall center console cover. It installed incorrectly proceed with repair procedure beginning at Step 3.

Repair Procedure:





3. Remove the parking brake cover (B).





4. Remove the console mounting screws as indicated by the circles.





5. Remove the console mounting bolts and then remove the floor console assembly (C).





6. Remove the A/T shift cable (D) from shift lever assembly.





7. Using a drift punch push out the old bushing (E) from the A/T shift cable and replace with a new one. Reinstall the A/T shift cable with saw-edged projections facing up.

Install all the removed components in reverse order of removal.

8. Verity proper shifter operation.
