Campaign SC069 - Front Wheel Speed Sensors

Model: Rondo [UN]

Group: Brake System(41)

Number: KT2007051401

Date: Thursday, May 17, 2007

Area: N. America

Subject
Front Wheel Speed Sensor Silicone Varnish
Application Treatment & Replacement (SC069)

- Description

This Service Campaign provides information relating to the replacement or silicone application treatment of existing wheel speed sensors. Rondo vehicles produced between 7/1/2006 12/31/2006 may exhibit the illumination of the ABS Warning Lamps for front wheel speed sensor diagnostic trouble codes. The cause of the ABS Warning Lamps illumination may be due to a permeable front wheel speed sensor housing, which can cause moisture to enter the sensor's internal windings. Kia is treating or replacing existing front wheel speed sensors to correct this condition.

Inspection Procedure:

Open hood and check for SC069 Campaign completion label on the panel above the under hood fuse box. If label exists, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.

If label does not exist, continue to step 1.

- Vehicles Affected

Rondo vehicles produced between 7/1/2006 12/31/2006

- Service Procedure

1. If the ABS Warning Lamps are illuminated after engine start up, proceed to the replacement procedure.

2. If the ABS Warning Lamps are not illuminated, raise and properly support the vehicle on a lift. Turn the steering wheel to left until the steering stop is contacted. Turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position.

3. With the vehicle at the desired height on the lift, locate the left hand wheel speed sensor from underneath the vehicle and remove the wheel speed sensor mounting bolt. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle.

4. Using a brush and shop air, remove any debris that has accumulated on the four (4) extruded parts of the sensor. Clean the exterior of the sensor. Do not use any cleaning chemicals.

*Notice
In areas of high amounts of road salts and damp environments, a minor amount of oxidation is normal, silicone varnish treatment can be applied to this oxidation.

5. Apply a small amount of rust penetrant (WD-40 or equivalent) to a shop towel and remove any steering knuckle surface oxidation from the wheel speed sensor mounting surface.

6. Use a shop towel to cover the strut / rotor / steering knuckle to prevent overspray from the silicone varnish. Apply a light application of silicone varnish to the protruding base.

Ensure a complete 360-degree application around the sensor. Wait
one (1) minute to ensure proper varnish set times, before
proceeding.

7. Install the wheel speed sensor into the knuckle and torque the mounting bolt (6.9-10.8 Nm / 5.1-8.0 ft-lbs). Apply a small amount of silicone varnish spray to the exterior of speed sensor / steering knuckle surface, utilizing a shop towel as a barrier to prevent overspray on chassis/brake components (see photo).

(Step 7 continued)

8. Turn the steering wheel to right until the steering stop is engaged.

9. Follow steps # 17 of the Service Procedure on the front right wheel speed sensor.

10. After the silicone varnish treatment of both front wheel speed sensors, install the SC069 completion label on the panel above the underhood fuse box.

Replacement Procedure:

1. If the ABS Warning Lamps are illuminated, verify the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) are for the front wheel speed sensors, and proceed with the remainder of this replacement procedure for both front wheel speed sensors. Clear any related DTC's and turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position.

2. If the DTC's are not relating to the front wheel speed sensors, consult the 2007 Service Manual for ABS related diagnostics. Complete this service or replacement procedure after making repairs.

3. Raise and properly support the vehicle on a lift, and remove both front tire assemblies.

4. Locate the left hand wheel speed sensor from underneath the vehicle and remove the wheel speed sensor mounting bolt. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle.

5. Apply a small amount of rust penetrant (WD-40 or equivalent) to a shop towel and remove any steering knuckle surface oxidation from the wheel speed sensor mounting surface.

6. Remove the two (2) wheel speed sensor assembly bracket bolts, attached to the lower strut and to the body.

7. Remove the two (2) harness retainer clips from the body, using a body trim tool.

8. Remove the six (6) fasteners from the front wheel splashguard, pull the wheel guard rearward to gain access to the wheel speed sensor connector and bracket.

9. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector and remove the bracket bolt from the body, remove sensor from vehicle.

10. Connect the new wheel speed sensor to the vehicle harness located under the splash shield and install the retaining bracket bolt and torque to (6.9-10.8 Nm / 5.1-8.0 ft-lb). Route the harness through the splash shield and install the six (6) fasteners to the splash shield / body. Install the two (2) harness retainer clips to the body.

11. Install the two (2) mounting bracket bolts to the body & lower strut (Torque: (6.9-10.8 Nm / 5.1- 8.0 ft-lb). Install the wheel speed sensor into the steering knuckle and Torque: (6.9-10.8 Nm / 5.1-8.0 ft-lbs).

12. Apply a small amount of silicone varnish spray to the exterior of speed sensor / steering knuckle surface, utilizing a shop towel as a barrier to prevent overspray on chassis/brake components.

*NOTICE
Wheel speed sensors replaced during the procedure must be returned to KMA for validation.

13. Proceed to follow steps # 112 of the Replacement Procedure on the front right wheel speed sensor.

14. After the replacement of both wheel speed sensors, install the SC069 completion label on the panel above the under hood fuse box.

15. Install both front tire and rim assemblies on the vehicle and follow the proper torque procedure.

Torque Lug Nuts in the sequence shown: (88-107 Nm / 72-86.8 ft lbs.
