- Description





This Service Campaign provides information relating to the Supplemental Restraint System Curtain Airbag Module Inspection/Replacement. Sixty-five (65) Rondo vehicles produced between 9/16/2006 and 4/3/2007 may have had the incorrect Supplemental Restraint System Curtain Airbag Module installed from the assembly plant. Kia is inspecting and, if necessary, replacing existing Supplemental Restraint System Curtain Airbag Modules to correct this condition.

*NOTICE
If your dealer has customer or in-stock vehicles that are part of this campaign, a specific VIN list containing those vehicles will be included with your service campaign package. Affected VIN list is also included in this TSB. Before starting the supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module replacement procedure, ensure that the vehicle is on the VIN list are not included in this campaign and do not require inspection/repair for this concern. If your dealer did not receive a specific VIN list with your service campaign package, then your dealer does not have any customers or vehicles in stock that are part of this service campaign.

Inspection Procedure

1. Open hood and check for SC071 Campaign completion label on the panel above the under hood fuse box. If label exists, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED. If label does not exist, continue to step 2.





2. Identify the seating configuration of the inspection vehicle: Five (5) person Seating option or Seven (7) person Seating option and follow the appropriate inspection procedure.





Inspection Procedure (Five (5) Person Seating

Configuration) If the vehicle you are inspecting has a
7 Person Seating Configuration, go to the next
section:

1. Open the rear hatch and remove the left and right hand side "D-pillar", SRS trim covers. Remove the ten millimeter (10mm) bolts.





2. Gently pull back the upper "D-pillar" trims on both the left
and right sides and inspect for the supplemental restraint
system curtain airbag module material. There should be no
supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module
material in the inspection area on either side.

3. If there is supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module material on either side, PROCEED TO THE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE FOR THE INCORRECT SIDE OR SIDE(S).

4. If the supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module material is not present on both the left hand and right hand sides, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.





5. Re-install "D-pillar" trim panel. Secure with bolt and replace SRS trim panel (both sides).





6. Install the Campaign SC071 completion label on the panel above the under hood fuse box.





Inspection Procedure (Seven (7) Person Seating
Configuration) If the vehicle you are inspecting has a
5 Person Seating Configuration, go back to the prior
inspection procedure

1. Open the rear hatch and remove the left and right side "D-pillar" SRS trim cover.





2. Gently pull back the upper "D-pillar" trim on both the left and right sides and inspect for supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module material. There should be visible supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module material in the inspection area on both the left and right sides.





3. If there is no supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module material on either side, PROCEED TO THE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE FOR THE INCORRECT SIDE OR SIDE(S).

4. If the supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module material is present on both sides, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.

5. Reinstall "D-pillar" trim panels, secure with bolts and replace SRS trim covers (both sides).





6. Install the Campaign SC071 completion label on the panel above the under-hood fuse box.

Replacement Procedure:

1. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. open the rear hatch and if equipped, remove the third (3rd) row seats or multipurpose box assembly. Rear seat torque: 28.9 ~ 39.8 lb.ft (16.7 ~ 25.5 Nm).





2. Lower all second (2nd) row seats, and remove all head rests. Remove both left & right 2nd row floor scuff trim pieces from both sides.





3. Remove the lower "D-pillar" trim pieces from the left and right sides. Do not disconnect the third (3rd) row seat belt mounting bolts, if equipped.

4. Remove the upper "D-pillar", trim pieces from both sides. Do not disconnect the second row (2nd) seat belt mounting bolts. Remove the front door floor scuff trim on both sides.





5. Remove both lower / upper "B-pillar" trim from the right side. Do not disconnect the passenger seat belt anchor mounting bolts during removal of trim. Remove only the lower driver's side seat belt anchor bolt to remove the driver's side lower / upper trim. (Tightening torque: 28.9 ~ 39.8 lb.ft (39.2 ~ 53.9 Nm).

6. Remove all support handles from the roof. Remove the overhead console and dome lamps.

7. Remove both "A-pillar" trim pieces and sun visors from both sides.

8. Remove the four remaining trim tabs with a body trim tool from the interior roof and remove headliner. Do not remove the headliner from the cabin of the vehicle.

CAUTION
Use care when handling the headliner to avoid damage during disassembly.





9. Remove the incorrect supplemental restraint system curtain airbag.





10. Install the correct supplemental restraint system curtain airbag. Torque bolts (5.2 ~ 6.6 lb.ft, 7.0 ~ 9.0 Nm). The supplemental restraint system curtain airbag module material is color coded for identification: left Side (blue color) & Right Side (red color). Ensure connector is properly installed.

CAUTION
Never twist the airbag module when installing it. If the module is twisted, airbag module may operated abnormally.

11. Assembly is reverse order of the disassembly procedure.

12. Install the Campaign SC071 completion label on the panel above the under hood fuse box. After completion of replacement procedure, verify that air bag warning lamp is not illuminated.





13. Dispose of the removed side curtain air bag according to your local, state, and federal procedures for secondary restraint system airbag materials. Refer to TSB GEN 016, Undeployed Airbag / Pre-tensioner Demonstration, for further information on manufacturer's disposal procedures.

14. For California dealers only: Also refer to TSB General Information 015-Disposal/Handling of Perchlorate Containing Materials Under California law.
