SUBJECT:
INFORMATION ON RIO 1.6L ENGINE IM TEST REGARDING
EGR/VVT READINESS
This TSB provides information on an issue regarding the reporting of EGR/VVT readiness status for 20062007MY Rio vehicles equipped with a 1.6L engine. Some 2006~2007 Rio vehicles report the EGR/VVT readiness as being unsupported while other vehicles report this readiness as being supported. This may cause some confusion or impact State Inspection and Maintenance (IM) programs.
Originally all 2006~2007MY Rio vehicles reported EGR/VVT readiness as "unsupported" even though they are equipped with VVT system monitors. The Rio vehicle began reporting EGR/VVT readiness as "supported" with the 2009MY Kia conducted a field fix on some of the 2006~2007MY vehicles (TSB: ENG 033 revised) to address an issue regarding rough idling and storage of certain fault codes and that involved upgrading (reprogramming) the Engine Control Module (ECM) on these vehicles. However Kia inadvertently included the 2009MY software readiness change so vehicles that have had this field fix now report the EGR/VVT readiness as being "supported."
Recommendation:
State Inspection and Maintenance (IM) programs and inspectors should expect to see a portion of the affected vehicles reporting EGR/VVT readiness as "unsupported" as well as a portion reporting "supported" (those that have been reprogrammed) It should also be expected that some vehicles may change from reporting "unsupported" to "supported" between inspections if they have been reprogrammed in between the inspections By using the Table below the Calibration Identification Number (CAL ID) can be used to confirm whether the vehicle should report "unsupported or "supported."
