RIO5 (JB) LEFT REAR SEATBACK CANNOT BE RAISED
(BODY 036)

Description

This bulletin provides a service procedure for 2006 and 2007 MY Rio5 vehicles with a left rear seat back that cannot be raised from the folded position. This condition is the result of the rear center seat belt webbing stopper passing through the webbing guide located at the top of the left rear seat. If the left rear seat cannot be raised from the lowered position because the rear center seat belt retractor is locked, follow the procedure in this TSB to resolve this concern.

Inspection Procedure

The cause of this condition is that the black rear center seat belt webbing stopper has slipped inside the seat belt cover webbing guide as shown.

Disassembly Procedure

1. If the retractor is locked and the webbing will not extend it prevents the left rear seat back from being raised properly. Raise the left rear seat back and cushion enough to access the rear center seat belt anchor and remove.

2. Raise the left rear seat back fully to access the rear center seat belt guide.

3. Remove the left rear seat headrest, pull the back of the guide forward and up (1) to release the rear guide clips.

4. Move the guide to the rear while pushing the front edge down (2) to release the two front guide clips.

5. Slip seat belt webbing through guide slot, remove old guide and dispose of properly.

6. Reinstall the rear center seat belt anchor bolts removed in step 1; torque bolts to 29 - 40 lb-ft.

Installation procedure for improved rear center seat belt webbing guide:

1. Slip the seat belt webbing through the slot in the new guide making sure the webbing stopper is outside of the webbing guide slot. From the rear of the vehicle, reach over the top of the left seat back and squeeze around the opening for webbing guide as shown.

2. Move webbing to the left and insert the right front webbing guide hook through the right slot in the webbing guide opening stiffener. Move the webbing to the right side and repeat the procedure for the left front webbing guide hook.

3. push the webbing guide forward until the rear webbing guide hooks clear the back of the webbing guide opening. Push the back of the webbing guide down engaging the rear webbing guide hooks under the back of the webbing guide opening stiffener.

4. Check to make sure all four front and rear webbing guide hooks are held properly by gently pulling up on all four corners of the webbing guide as shown. If any of the webbing guide hooks are not held down repeat steps 1 through 3 above. Re-install off rear head rest.
