2006 Optima (MG) HVAC Field Coil Replacement

- Description

Overview:

Some 2006.5 Optima (MG) vehicles built between 12/09/05 - 07/06/2006, may exhibit customer complaints related to insufficient air conditioning cooling. Vehicles built during these production dates, may exhibit an open circuit condition in the air conditioning magnetic field coil. To correct for this condition the field coil parts are available separately as service item.

Service Procedure:

1. Turn the Air Conditioning (HVAC) to the "ON" position.

2. Verify engagement of the compressor clutch, if the clutch is operational monitor the cycling of the compressor clutch and road test for any intermittent conditions. If the compressor clutch is not engaged, verify battery voltage to the field coil circuit.

3. If battery voltage is present to the compressor clutch circuit, check the field coil resistance.

4. If you suspect the field coil circuit has an open circuit, check the resistance between the field coil and compressor housing (Photo #1). Resistance specification at 70°F is 3-4 Ohms. If the resistance is less / more than the specification, replace the field coil assembly (Photo #2).

NOTE
During disassembly of the compressor clutch assembly, the spacer shim should be transferred to the new assembly components and not discarded.
