Description
This bulletin provides information related to a repair for 2004MY through 2006MY Spectra automatic transaxle equipped vehicles with 2.0L CWT engines.
Some Spectra automatic transaxle vehicles may exhibit a second to third gear upshift shock after the vehicle is at operating temperature. This condition may also be felt as a slip or flare followed by a shock while shifting from second to third gear. This bulletin describes the procedure for upgrading the ECU software with new logic to correct the above condition.

Service Procedure
*NOTICE
A fully charged battery is necessary before programming can take place, Do NOT connect a battery charger to the vehicle during reprogramming. Make sure the blower motor and other electrical accessories are OFF during programming
^ All Re-programming must be done with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi Scan Pro during the reprogramming procedure.
^ Do NOT start the engine during reprogramming.
^ Do NOT turn the ignition key "OFF" or interrupt the power supply during reprogramming,
^ When the reprogramming is completed, turn the Ignition key "OFF" and wait 20 seconds before starting the engine.
AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE:
1. Attach the OBD II Data Link Connector (DLC) (20 pins connector) cable to the Hi Scan Pro main body and tighten the two (2) screws securely.
2. Remove the current system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the blue 32 MB reprogramming software card with new ECU program into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot.
3. Plug the DLC cable from the Hi-Scan Pro into the vehicle's connector (20 pins connector) under the instrument panel on the driver's side.
REPROGRAMMING:
4. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
5. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro on and press "ENTER"
6. Select option "34. LD 2.0 04-06MY TCU 2 -->3 SHIFT" and press "ENTER".
7. Select option "01. LD 2.0 04-06MY TCU 2 --> 3 SHIFT [AUTO]" and press "ENTER".
8. Enter the correct password "0525" for automatic reprogramming and press "ENTER".
NOTICE
Do not Interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECU may be rendered Inoperative if the software does not download completely.
9. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the ECU automatically. See the ROM ID Information Table for the previous and new ECU ROM ID's.
10. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, press ENTER and turn off the ignition for 20 seconds.
11. Start the engine to check for proper operation.
12. Check for any engine or transaxle section diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) using the Hi-Scan Pro with the system software card and erase any DTC present.
Note:
Refer to the ECU Reprogramming Troubleshooting section if the reprogram download does not work properly.
MANUAL UPDATE PROCEDURE:
If the automatic update procedure fails to download the new program follow the manual update procedure outlined below.
1. Turn the ignition key to the on position. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro on and select option "34. LD 2.0 04-06MY TCU 2 3 SHIFT" and press "ENTER".
2. Select option "02. LD 2.0 04-D6MY TCU 2 3 SHIFT [ERROR]" for manual upgrade and press "ENTER".
3. Record the vehicle ECU part number that is located on the ECU label above the left kick panel. Compare the ECU part number to the manual selection part numbers in the Hi Scan Pro ECU menu and select the proper menu item.
4. Enter the correct password according to the vehicle ECU part number as shown in the table below and press "ENTER".
*NOTICE
Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECU may be rendered inoperative if the software does not download completely.
5. Check to make sure the new ECU ROM ID displayed is correct by referencing the ROM ID Information Table.
6. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed turn the ignition key off wait 20 seconds and then start the engine to check for proper operation.
7. Check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) using the High-Scan Pro with the system software card. Erase any DTC present in the engine and transaxle section of the Hi-Scan Pro.
ECU REPROGRAMMING TROUBLESHOOTING:
^ "INVALID PASSWORD" - Enter the correct password for the automatic update mode again (0525).
^ "REPROGRAMMING ERROR PLEASE WAIT FOR RETRY" - An error occurred during reprogramming, the Hi-Scan Pro will retry the reprogramming automatically.
^ "THIS ECM IS DIFFERENT TYPE" - The ECM on this vehicle is not the type subject to this reprogramming procedure
^ "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED" - The reprogramming has previously been done on this vehicle.
^ "REPROGRAMMING ERROR PLEASE CHECK SYSTEM" - In this case, you must reprogram manually by selecting menu option "02. LD 2.0 04-06MY TCU 23 SHIFT [ERROR]".
RESETTING AND RELEARNING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ADAPTIVE VALUES:
Whenever the automatic transaxle control module is reprogrammed, the automatic transaxle adaptive values must be reset and must be relearned by the control module to have good automatic transaxle shift quality. Each transaxle control module adjusts pressure during shifting to compensate for variations in pressures and clutch clearances due to manufacturing tolerances to achieve the best shift quality.
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ADAPTIVE VALUE RESETTING PROCEDURE:
1. Use the scan tool to reset the automatic transaxle adaptive values in the automatic transaxle section. Select option "04. Resetting Adaptive Values" and press "ENTER".
Note:
Disconnecting battery terminals on this and other late model vehicles will NOT reset adaptive values.
2. Turn the ignition key on with the engine off and the transmission gear selector in park. Press the "[RST]" button and then press the "YES" button when ready.
DYNAMIC AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ADAPTIVE LEARNING PROCEDURE:
Perform automatic transaxle relearn drive with the scan tool monitoring ATF temperature. After the ATF temperature reaches 122 degrees F (55 degrees C) perform the following driving steps:
1. Stop the vehicle and drive at constant 30% TPS shifting from 1st through 3rd gears. The shift RPM should be approximately 3000 RPM.
2. Repeat step 1 three to five times until any shock or flare is eliminated.
STATIC AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ADAPTIVE LEARNING PROCEDURE:
1. Stop the vehicle and shift into N for three seconds Shift from N to D for one second or until fully engaged in D then back to N.
2. Repeat step one (1.) three to five times or until there is no shock when shifting from N to D.
3. Stop the vehicle and shift into N for three seconds. Shift from N to R for one second or until fully engaged in R then back to N.
4. Repeat step three (3.) three to five times or until there is no shock when shifting from N to R
The relearn procedure is complete.
