Engine/Transmission Controls - DTC P1529

SOURCE: KIA Technician Times Volume 7 Issue 5, 2004

TITLE: DTC P1529

APPLIES TO: Spectra 2.0L

SERVICE TIP:

The automatic transmission equipped Spectra LD DTC P1529 is a TCM request to the ECM to turn the MIL on. This logic is used even though the Spectra LD has one PCM which contains the engine and transmission control module. The P1529 DTC indicates a problem with the automatic transmission and the TCM must be checked for diagnostic trouble codes (DTC). Also, freeze frame data is stored in the ECM under the P1529 DTC. Be sure to retrieve the freeze frame data before clearing the P1529 DTC. If there is a P1529 DTC stored in the ECM and there is no DTC stored in the TCM, the automatic transmission relay output voltage may be too low. The vehicle may also be in fail safe/ limp-home-mode. Review the scan tool current data for the automatic transmission control relay voltage (#16) which should be B+. Wiggle the A/T relay in the under-hood fuse/relay box (see picture) while watching the current data A/T voltage. If the voltage drops down or fluctuates below B+, the connection is poor in the underhood fuse/relay box and it must be replaced.
