Description

This bulletin provides information relating to a repair for 2005MY Spectra and Sportage automatic transmission equipped vehicles with 2.0L engines.

Some 2005 2.0L equipped Spectra and Sportage vehicles may turn on the MIL with DTC P0736 (Reverse Gear Incorrect Ratio) stored without any system fault.

This bulletin describes the procedure for upgrading the TCM software with new logic to correct this condition.

2005MY Spectra and Sportage automatic transaxle equipped vehicles with 2.0L engines.

Service Procedure





ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE:

Download the latest Hi-Scan Pro reprogramming software for the 32MB (blue label) reprogramming card from the Kia Service Information System (KSIS). Click on the downloads link located in the News Center on the KSIS Home Page.

* NOTICE

^ A fully charged battery is necessary before reprogramming can take place. DO NOT connect a battery charger to the vehicle during reprogramming. Make sure the blower motor is "OFF" during programming.

^ All reprogramming must be done with the ignition key in the "ON" position.

^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during the reprogramming procedure.

^ DO NOT start the engine during reprogramming.

^ DO NOT turn the ignition key "OFF" or interrupt the power supply during reprogramming.

^ When the reprogramming is completed, turn the ignition key "OFF" and wait 20 seconds before starting the engine.

^ ONLY use approved reprogramming software designed for the correct model, year and engine size. Failure to do so may create other drivability issues due to the use of the incorrect ECM/PCM calibration.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:

1. Attach the OBD II Data Link Connector (DLC) (20 pins connector) cable to the Hi-Scan Pro main body and tighten the two (2) screws securely.

2. Remove the current system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming software card with the new TCM program into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot.








3. Plug the DLC cable from the Hi-Scan Pro into the vehicle's connector (16-pin connector) under the instrument panel on the driver's side.

AUTOMATIC REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

1. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.

2. Turn the HI-Scan pro on and press "ENTER".





3. For SPECTRA (LD) TCM reprogramming, select option "26. LD 2.0 TCU REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.





For SPORTAGE (KM) TCM reprogramming, select option "27. KM 2.0 TCU REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.





4. For SPECTRA (LD) TCM reprogramming, select option "01. LD 2.0 TCU REVERSE INCORRECT [AUTO]" and press ENTER.





For SPORTAGE (KM) TCM Reprogramming, select option "01. KM 2.0 TCU REVERSE INCORRECT [AUTO]" and press ENTER.

5. Enter "0525 as the password for automatic reprogramming mode and press "ENTER". The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication, check the TCM ID and reprogram the TCM. Turn the ignition key OFF and ON in accordance with the directions displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.

Notes:

^ The Hi-Scan Pro detects the current TCM ID, assigns the new TCM ID and displays them on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.

^ Check the TCM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct TCM software is being downloaded.

Refer to the ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE.

^ If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program, use the MANUAL REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.

6. When the REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED message is displayed, turn the Hi-Scan Pro off.

7. Turn the ignition key off for 20 seconds and start the engine to check for proper operation.

8. Check for any engine or transmission section diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) using the Hi-Scan Pro with the system software card and erase any DTC present.

Note:
Refer to the TCM Reprogramming Troubleshooting section if the reprogram download does not work properly.

If the automatic update procedure fails to download the new program, follow the Manual Reprogramming Procedure.

MANUAL REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON and press ENTER.





3. For SPECTRA (LD) TCM reprogramming, select option "26. LD 2.0 TCU REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER. For SPORTAGE (KM) TCM reprogramming, select option "27. KM 2.0 TCU REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.

4. For SPECTRA (LD) TCM reprogramming, select option "02. LD 2.0 TCU REVERSE INCORRECT [ERROR]" and press ENTER. For SPORTAGE (KM) TCM reprogramming, select option "02. KM 2.0 TCU REVERSE INCORRECT [ERROR]" and press ENTER.





5. Choose the vehicle type and TCM P/N which is correct for your vehicle by using the ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE shown in this TSB and press ENTER.

6. Enter the correct password according to the vehicle TCM part number as shown in the table and press "ENTER"





PASSWORD TABLE:

7. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication, check the TCM ID and reprogram the TCM. Turn the ignition key OFF and ON in accordance with the directions displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.

Notes:

^ The Hi-Scan Pro displays the new TCM ID on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.

^ Check the TCM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct TCM software is being downloaded.
