Subject
EVAP CANISTER HOSE VENT ELBOW
This bulletin provides information relating to the replacement of the EVAP Canister Hose Vent Elbow and the Fuel Tank (Air) Filter in some 2004 & 2005MY Spectra (2.0L) vehicles built before 3/8/05. The original elbow may allow water intrusion into the Canister Close Valve (CCV) filter/fuel tank air filter. This may cause the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to illuminate with a DTC of P0449 (EVAP Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit). To prevent water intrusion into the fuel tank air filter, follow the procedures in this Technical Service Bulletin to replace the original canister vent elbow with the updated canister vent elbow.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Install Hi-Scan Pro and check for current or history code of DTC P0449 and record.
2. Lift vehicle on hoist.
3. Locate canister vent elbow on left rear side of vehicle near fuel tank.
4. Remove canister vent hose from vent elbow.
5. Remove vent elbow from frame cross section.
6. Install new canister vent elbow on hose and secure with clamp.
7. Insert elbow in frame cross section.
8. If a current or history code, was found and recorded in Step 1, then replace the fuel tank filter.
9. If no DTC P0449 was found/recorded, filter does not need to be replaced. Proceed to final check by installing Hi-Scan Pro and running EVAP test.
REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR FUEL TANK AIR FILTER
1. Remove/lower fuel tank to gain access to the canister assembly which is mounted above the fuel tank. (Refer to KSIS or the FL group in Service Manual)
Note: Do not hang fuel tank from hoses.
2. Remove the (2) bolts holding the canister assembly to the fuel tank and remove the canister assembly from the fuel tank.
3. Remove bolt & nut holding air filter canister bracket to canister assembly.
4. Remove auxiliary canister. Remove hose between auxiliary canister and main canister, then slide auxiliary canister to left.
5. Insert small screwdriver in slot of CCV and depress locking tab that locks CCV and remove fuel tank air filter and CCV together, in the downward direction.
6. Rotate air filter (counter clockwise) approximately 90 degrees and separate the air filter from the CCV.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:
Assemble in reverse order.
Note: After installation is complete, install Hi-Scan Pro tool and run EVAP test.
Test is run to quickly determine overall integrity of EVAP system and is not intended to detect a (partially) clogged CCV/fuel tank filter.tank filter.
AFFECTED PRODUCTION RANGE:
