2004 SPECTRA 2.0L LOW SPEED DRIVELINE BUMP/SHOCK
This bulletin provides information related to a repair for 2004MY Spectra automatic transaxle equipped vehicles with 2.0L CVVT engines produced from 12/1/03 to 7/12/04.
Some Spectra 2.0L vehicles may exhibit a mild driveline "bump" or shock while accelerating from a stop after the vehicle has been parked for more than one hour. The driveline bump may be felt as one to three small bumps while accelerating (usually under 10 MPH).
This bulletin describes the procedure for upgrading the ECU software with new logic to correct the above condition.
ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE:
Download the latest Hi-Scan Pro reprogramming software for the 32MB (blue label) reprogramming card from the Kia Service Information System (KSIS). Click on the downloads link located in the News Center. Kia retailers can also order a CD (optional) and/or a 32MB blue reprogramming card by calling and ordering P/N 111242KM.
* NOTICE
^ A fully charged battery is necessary before reprogramming can take place. DO NOT connect a battery charger to the vehicle during reprogramming. Make sure the blower motor is "OFF" during programming.
^ All reprogramming must be done with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during the reprogramming procedure.
^ DO NOT start the engine during reprogramming.
^ DO NOT turn the ignition key "OFF" or interrupt the power supply during reprogramming.
^ When the reprogramming is completed, turn the ignition key "OFF" and wait several seconds before starting the engine.
AUTOMATIC REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
1. Attach the OBD II Data Link Connector (DLC) cable to the Hi-Scan Pro main body and tighten the two (2) screws securely.
2. Remove the current system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming software card with the new ECU program into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot.
3. Connect the OBD II Data Link Connector (DLC) cable under the dashboard on the driver's side.
4. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
5. Turn the Hi-Scan pro on and press "ENTER".
6. Select option "24. LD 2.0 CVVT 1->2 SHIFT FEEL" and press enter.
7. Select option "01.LD 2.0 CVVT 1->2 SHIFT FEEL [AUTO]" and press "ENTER".
8. Enter the correct password, "0525", for automatic reprogramming and press "ENTER".
* NOTICE
Do NOT interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECU may be rendered inoperative if the software does not download completely.
9. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the ECU automatically. See the ROM ID Information Table for the previous and new ECU ROM ID's.
10. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, press ENTER and turn off the ignition for 20 seconds.
11. Start the engine to check for proper operation.
12. Check for any engine or transaxle section diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) using the Hi-Scan Pro with the system software card. Erase any DTC present in the engine and transaxle sections of the Hi-Scan Pro.

MANUAL REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
* NOTICE
If reprogramming did NOT complete properly or was interrupted, repeat process using the following procedure.
1. Turn the ignition key to the on position. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro on and select option "24. LD 2.0 CVVT 1->2 SHIFT FEEL" and press "ENTER".
2. Select option "02. LD 2.0 CVVT 1->2 SHIFT FEEL [ERROR]" for manual upgrade and press "ENTER".
3. Record the vehicle ECU part number that is located on the ECU label above the left kick panel. Compare the ECU part number to the manual selection part numbers in the Hi- Scan Pro ECU menu shown and select the proper menu item.
4. Enter the correct password according to the vehicle ECU part number as shown in the table and press "ENTER".
* NOTICE
Be sure to input the correct password. If an incorrect password is selected, the correct software will NOT be downloaded.
5. Check the new ECU ROM ID displayed is correct by referencing the ROM ID Information Table.
6. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn the ignition key off, wait 20 seconds and then start the engine to check for proper operation.
7. Check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) using the High-Scan Pro with the system software card. Erase any DTC present in the engine and transaxle sections of the Hi-Scan Pro.
ECU REPROGRAMMING TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE:
^ "INVALID PASSWORD" - Enter the correct password for the automatic update mode again, 0525.
^ "REPROGRAMMING ERROR PLEASE WAIT FOR RETRY" - An error occurred during reprogramming, the Hi-Scan Pro will retry the reprogramming automatically.
^ "THIS ECM IS DIFFERENT TYPE" - The ECM on this vehicle is not the type subject to this reprogramming procedure.
^ "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED" - The reprogramming has previously been done on this vehicle.
^ "REPROGRAMMING ERROR PLEASE CHECK SYSTEM" - In this case, you must reprogram manually by selecting menu option "02. LD 2.0 CVVT 1->2 SHIFT FEEL [ERROR]".
