OPTIMA 2.7L ECM UPGRADE
This bulletin provides information relating to an Optima ECM upgrade. Some 2003MY Optima vehicles built between 5/31/02 - 4/25/03 and some 2004MY vehicles built between 5/14/04 - 7/24/04 may experience a hesitation while driving.
Use the procedures in this bulletin to reprogram the Hi-Scan Pro, Engine Control Module (ECM) software for 2003 - 2004 MY Optima vehicles with 2.7L engines to resolve this hesitation concern.
ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE:
A new 32MB Reprogramming Card is being provided to accommodate reprogramming software due to the fact that the existing 16MB card (yellow label) is at the limit of its storage capacity. This card is provided with the Optima 2.7L ECM Upgrade pre-installed.
This card will be used for future Hi-Scan Pro re-programming software. All reprogramming software previously issued will remain on the 16MB (yellow label) reprogramming card and will not be carried over to the new card.
REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
*NOTICE
Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position. Be careful NOT to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.
If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.
Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
Do not turn the ignition key OFF during reprogramming.
When the reprogramming is completed, turn OFF the ignition key for 20 seconds before starting the engine.
Before Starting Procedure:
Check the production date on the FMVSS door label to verify that the vehicle is within the production range shown.
To prepare for reprogramming in case of an error, write down the old and new ECM IDs displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen during the automatic update procedure.
The recorded ECM IDs will be used if the Hi-Scan Pro fails to automatically download the new ECM software.
AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE:
1. Attach the Data Link Connector (DLC) cable to the Hi-Scan Pro main body and tighten the two (2) bolts securely.
2. Remove any software cards from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the new 32MB (blue label) reprogramming card into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot. Use the most current reprogramming software.

If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program properly, use the manual update procedure following this section.
*NOTICE
Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time. The ECM may be rendered inoperative if the reprogram does not download completely.
10. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, check the new ECM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct ECM software has been downloaded. Refer to the "ECM SPECIFICATIONS" in this TSB for the ECM ID listing. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro OFF to complete the download procedure.
11. To verify that the reprogramming is completed successfully, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position for 20 seconds. Start the engine and check for proper engine operation.
