Electronic Throttle Control Module: Testing and Inspection
ETS (ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEM)ETS (Electronic Throttle System) consists of:
- In put signals from Accelerator Position Sensor (APS), Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), Ignition Switch and Serial Communication Line,
- ETS Motor and
- Limp - Home Valve
to control the idle speed, throttle valve and TCS by only one motor.
In ECU and ETS the signals from Accelerator Position Sensor (APS) and Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) are the most important.
They have two circuits in sensor module, one is flowed to ECU and the other is flowed to ETS. ECU calculates the throttle target value with the signals from APS #2 (MAIN) and TPS #2 (SUB) and the ETS control module controls the ETS motor with the signals from APS #1 (SUB) and TPS #1 (MAIN).
Circuit Diagram (TPS, APS, ETS):
Harness Connector:
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS) OUTPUT FEATURE
- (1) TPS #2 (SUB) for ECU
Gradient: 100% / 105°
- (2) TPS #1 (MAIN) for ETS
Gradient: 100% / 105°
SENSOR INSPECTION (TPS)
USING OHMMETER
1. Disconnect the TPS connector.
2. Measure resistance between terminal 3 (GND) and 1 (Sensor supply).
Set Value : 1.5 - 3.5 kOhm
3. Measure resistance between terminal 3 (GND) and 2 (Sensor signal output).
4. Inspect the sensor signal with rotating the throttle valve from C.T. to W.O.T., at this time the sensor signal varies proportional to throttle angle.
5. Replace the TPS if the sensor signal is out of range and is not directly proportional to throttle angle.
Tightening Torque : 1.5 - 2.5 Nm (0.15 - 0.25 kg.m, 1.1 - 1.8 lb.ft)
ACCELERATOR POSITION SENSOR (APS) OUTPUT FEATURE
- (1) APS #2 (MAIN) for ECU
Gradient: 100% / 100°
- (2) Idle Switch operating point
- (3) Closed Throttle
SENSOR INSPECTION (APS)
USING OHMMETER
1. Disconnect the APS connector.
2. Measure resistance between GND and Sensor supply.
APS #1 (SUB): Terminal 7 - 8
APS #2 (MAIN): Terminal 1 - 2
Set Value : 3.5 - 6.5 kOhm
3. Measure resistance between GND and Sensor signal output.
APS #1 (SUB): Terminal 6 - 7
APS #2 (MAIN): Terminal 3 - 1
4. Inspect the sensor signal with pressing the accelerator pedal, at this time the sensor signal varies proportional to accelerator pedal angle.
5. Replace the APS if the sensor signal is out of range and is not directly proportional to the accelerator pedal angle.
Tightening Torque : 2.5 - 4.5 Nm (0.25 - 0.45 kg.m, 1.8 - 3.3 lb.ft)
Harness Inspection Procedures (TPS):
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
TPS signal is important in the control of the Automatic Transaxle. Shift shock and other trouble will occur if the sensor is faulty.
