Parking Brake System: Service and Repair

PARKING BRAKE





COMPONENTS

REMOVAL (BRAKE CABLE)
1. Disconnect battery negative terminal.





2. Remove the lower crash pad panel, parking brake release cable knob, hood cable release knob and switch plate.
3. Remove the floor console.
4. Remove the release cable assembly.





5. After disconnecting the front parking brake cable,, remove the parking brake pedal assembly.





6. Remove the adjusting nut and the front parking brake cable.
7. Take up the carpet.
8. Remove the parking brake cable clamp and grommet.





9. Move the center muffler heat protector center panel to the front and then remove cable mounting nut.
10. Remove the tire assembly and the brake disc.
11. Remove the springs and shoe hold down pins.





12. Remove the cable retaining ring.





13. Disconnect the cable end from the trailing shoe.
14. Drive out the parking brake cable to the under body side.
15. Installation procedure is the reverse of removal.





16. Tighten the bolt and nut of parking brake pedal assembly as below figure order.

REMOVAL (BRAKE SHOE)
1. Remove rear disc caliper assembly.(Refer to "Rear disc brake")





2. Before removing the brake disc, chalk both sides of the screw.

NOTE: Reduce the shoe gap by turning the adjuster with appropriate tool.





3. After turn the pin to coincide with hole of spring cap, remove the shoe hold spring.





4. Remove the return spring.





5. Disconnect the cable end from the trailing shoe.

INSPECTION





1. Measure the drum inside diameter.
Standard value: 190 mm (7.48 inch)
Service limit: 191 mm (7.52 inch)

CAUTION: If the brake drum inner diameter is greater than the service limit, replace the brake drum.





2. Measure the brake lining thickness.
Standard value: 4 mm (0.16 inch)
Service limit: 1.5 mm (0.06 inch)

CAUTION: If the brake lining thickness is less than the service limit, replace the brake lining.





3. Inspect the brake lining and drum for proper contact.

ASSEMBLY (BRAKE SHOE)





1. Install the parking brake cable to the operating lever.





2. Apply the grease to the area in the figure and return spring.
3. Install the upper return spring and brake shoes.





4. Turn the adjuster in counter clockwise direction and install.

NOTE:
Direction of adjuster turns
Clockwise: narrowing the shoe gap
Counterclockwise: widen the shoe gap

5. Install the lower return spring.
6. Install the shoe hold spring with a pliers.
7. Install the disc brake and then align the mark while tightening the screw.
