Crankshaft Position Sensor - Recall Campaign

This bulletin provides information on a recall campaign to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) on certain Optima 2.5 and 2.7 liter V-6 engines.

The CKP installed in some 2001 and 2002MY Optima models equipped with 2.5 and 2.7 liter V-6 engines produced between 9/9/00 and 8/17/01 may have a manufacturing defect involving damage to a capacitor on its internal printed circuit board. A CKP with a damaged capacitor could cause engine stalling.





To correct this situation, Kia is recalling affected 2001 and 2002MY Optima V-6 models to replace the CKP

* NOTICE
There is no charge to the customer for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected 2001 or 2002 Optima until it has been repaired, pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.

WARNING
Failure to follow procedures, or failure to adhere to Warnings, Cautions, and Notices could result in personal injury and/or unnecessary vehicle repairs.

INSPECTION:

1. Open hood.





2. Check the bulkhead at the location indicated for a green campaign completion label.

3. If a campaign completion label exists on the bulkhead, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.

4. If a green campaign completion label DOES NOT EXIST on the bulkhead, continue on to Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:





1. Open hood, remove CKP sensor connector from retainer and disconnect from harness connector.





2. Raise and support vehicle on hoist. Remove retaining bolt from CKP sensor and remove sensor.

3. Apply a small amount of clean engine oil to "0" ring on new sensor and install into engine block.





4. Reinstall retaining bolt and torque to 5-6 Nm (42-52 lb-in).





5. Lower vehicle, reconnect CKP sensor and reinstall connector into retainer.

6. Clear all DTCs, cycle ignition key off and on, start engine and verify proper operation.





7. Install campaign completion label on engine compartment bulkhead at location shown.

AFFECTED PRODUCTION RANGE:

2001 and 2002MY Optima V-6 models produced from 9/9/00 to 8/17/01.
