OPTIMA 2.4L ECM REPROGRAMMING
This bulletin provides information relating to an Optima ECM upgrade. Some 2003 - 2005MY Optima vehicles may experience hesitation for a short period of time after an initial cold start.
Use the procedures in this bulletin to reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM) software for 2003 - 2005MY Optima vehicles with 2.4L engines to resolve this cold hesitation concern.
Use the 32MB blue reprogramming card that was sent to your dealer October 2004. Download the latest Hi-Scan Pro reprogramming software for the 32MB (blue label) reprogramming card from the Kia Service Information System (KSIS). The "Downloads" page is accessed by first logging onto KSIS, then by clicking on the "Downloads" link located in KSIS News Center. Dealers can also order a CD (optional) by calling 866 KIA-TOOLS and ordering P/N 111321KM.
NOTICE
A fully charged battery is necessary before reprogramming can take place. DO NOT connect a battery charger to the vehicle during reprogramming. Make sure the blower motor is "OFF" during programming.
- All reprogramming must be done with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
- Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during the reprogramming procedure.
- DO NOT start the engine during reprogramming.
- DO NOT turn the ignition key "OFF" or interrupt the power supply during reprogramming.
- When the reprogramming is completed, turn the ignition key OFF" and wait 20 seconds before starting the engine.
- ONLY use approved reprogramming software designated for the correct model, year and engine size. Failure to do so may create other drivability issues due to the use of the incorrect ECM/PCM calibration.
ECM ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE:
AUTOMATIC REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
1. Remove the system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the blue reprogramming software card with the new ECM program into the Hi-Scan Pro upper slot.
2. Install the reprogramming adapter to the Hi-Scan Pro.
3. Connect the power cables to the vehicle's battery and plug the reprogramming adapter into the underhood 20-pin DLC connection.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON and press ENTER. Select option #29 "MS 2.4 Cold Hesitation" and press ENTER.
5. Select option "MS 2.4 Cold Hesitation [AUTO]" and press ENTER.
6. Enter "0525" as the password for automatic reprogramming mode and press ENTER. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication, check the ECM ID and reprogram the ECM. Turn the ignition key OFF and ON in accordance with the directions displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro Screen.
7. When "REPROGRAMMING is COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn the Hi-Scan Pro OFF.
8. Turn the ignition key OFF for about 20 seconds and then start the engine to confirm proper operation of the vehicle.
9. Check for diagnostic trouble codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with system software card and erase any trouble codes.
Reflash Programming Notes:
- The Hi-Scan Pro detects the current ECM ID, assigns the new ECM ID and displays them on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.
- Check the ECM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct ECM software is being downloaded. Refer to the "ECM ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE" of this TSB.
- If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program, use the MANUAL REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.
MANUAL REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:
- 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON and press ENTER. Select option #29 "MS 2.4 Cold Hesitation" and press ENTER. Select option "MS Cold Hesitation [ERROR]" and press ENTER.
- 2. Choose the correct vehicle reference and press ENTER.
Note: U.S. Spec. Optima vehicles do not have immobilizer systems. Disregard + IMMO selections on Hi Scan Pro screen; select appropriate option from the - IMMO choices.
Manual Reflash Programming Notes:
- The Hi-Scan Pro displays the new ECM ID on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.
- Check the ECM ID displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen to verify that the correct ECM software is being downloaded. Refer to the "ECM ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE of this TSB.
3. Enter the password that is correct for your vehicle for manual reprogramming and press ENTER.
4. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication, check the ECM ID and reprogram the ECM. Turn the ignition key OFF and ON in accordance with the directions displayed on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.
5. When "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn the Hi-Scan Pro OFF.
6. Turn the ignition key OFF for about 20 seconds and start the engine to confirm proper operation of the vehicle.
7. Check for diagnostic trouble codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with system software card and erase any trouble codes.
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION:
