Lighting - High Beams Apparently Inoperative

SOURCE: KIA Technician Times Volume 7 Issue 1, 2004

TITLE: High beams Inop

APPLIES TO:

SERVICE TIP:

All 2003 and 2004 Optima EX models equipped with auto headlights have two position headlight switches; On & Auto. When the headlamp switch is in the "auto" position, the auto light-control system switches headlights and taillights on or off automatically, depending on ambient lighting conditions. When the headlamps are on because the auto control system detected low ambient lighting, only low beams are available. If high beams are desired, the headlamp switch must be in the "ON" position.

Note: The passing lamps operate properly while in the auto position.

Customers may not be aware of this design characteristic and could be under the impression that the system is not operating correctly. Should this occur, first verify that the system operates as designed then explain proper operation and usage to the customer, including the recommendation to use the "ON" position for all nighttime driving.
