Disassembly and Reassembly
Disassembly1. Rigidly support steering wheel lock portion of column, and then use a chisel to make a groove (screwdriver slot) in head of two steering lock bolts.
Notice: Secure column in a vise whose jaws are covered with soft brass or cloth.
2. Hold steering column in a vise and use a screwdriver to remove lock bolts.
3. Remove steering lock assembly.
4. Remove two universal joint pinch bolts from steering column assembly and intermediate shaft.
5. Remove intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
Inspection
1. Check for following and replace assembly if necessary.
Steering shaft assembly
Column bushing wear.
Intermediate shaft
Excessive play in universal joint, abnormal noise, or sticking.
Steering lock assembly
Verify that cable connector cannot be moved when key is in LOCK position, but that it will move freely with key in any other position.
Assembly
1. Install intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
Tightening torque: 13 - 20 ft. lbs. (18 - 26 Nm, 1.8 - 2.7 kg-m)
2. Install universal joint onto steering column assembly and intermediate shaft and then tighten two universal joint pinch bolts.
Tightening torque: 13 - 20 ft. lbs. (18 - 26 Nm, 1.8 - 2.7 kg-m)
3. Install steering lock assembly on jacket. Install new steering lock mounting bolts, and tighten them until heads break off..
