Service Campaign: Rio Engine Control Module Software Update

This bulletin provides information on a service campaign to reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2001-2003 Rio models produced from 5/4/00 through 10/31/02.

To prevent certain Rio vehicles equipped with 1.5/1.6 liter engines from experiencing stalling during idling or at near-stopping conditions, reprogram the vehicle Engine Control Module (ECM).





ROM ID INFORMATION TABLE

Use the following procedures to reprogram the ECM.

NOTICE
There is no charge to the customer for this repair. Under applicable law, you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected 2001-2003 Rio until it has been repaired, pursuant to the procedures set forth in this bulletin.

INSPECTION:





Open hood, check for SC034 Campaign Completion Label on bulkhead above master cylinder.
^ If label exists, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.
^ If label DOES NOT EXIST, continue on to REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE.

REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:





1. Remove program card from the upper slot of the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming card.





2. Connect Hi-Scan Pro to the OBDII connector located under the dash on the driver's side.





3. Turn ignition key to the "ON" position, turn Hi-Scan Pro on and select "17. RIO LOW SPEED ENG. STALL" and press the "ENTER" key.





4. Select "01. RIO LOW SPEED ENG. STALL [AUTO]" and press the "ENTER" key.





5. At the prompt, enter your password "0525" and press the "ENTER" key.





6. If "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED" message is displayed, go to step 17 to install campaign completion label and submit warranty claim.





7. If not, programming will proceed automatically as shown.





8. When "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn ignition key to the "OFF" position for a minimum of 20 seconds. Turn Hi-Scan Pro off, remove reprogramming card and insert diagnostic card.

9. Start engine and verify normal operation.

Note:
Check ECM and TCM for diagnostic trouble codes and erase as needed. Proceed to Step 17.

Note:
If reprogramming was interrupted or did not complete properly, proceed to error mode reprogramming.

ERROR MODE REPROGRAMMING:





10. Turn ignition key to the "ON" position, turn Hi-Scan Pro on and select "17. RIO LOW SPEED ENG. STALL" and press the "ENTER" key.





11. Select "02. RIO LOW SPEED ENG. STALL [ERROR]" and press the "ENTER" key.





12. Select engine size, 1.5DOHC for 01 and 02 model years, or 1 .6DOHC for 03 model year and press the "ENTER" key.





PASSWORD TABLE





13. At the prompt, enter your password from the table and press the "ENTER" key.





14. Reprogramming will proceed as shown.





15. When "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn ignition key to the "OFF" position for a minimum of 20 seconds. Turn Hi-Scan Pro off and disconnect from vehicle.

16. Start engine and verify normal operation.

Note:
Check ECM and TCM for diagnostic trouble codes and erase as needed.





17. Apply SC034 Campaign Completion Label to bulkhead above master cylinder.

FOR CALIFORNIA, MASSACHUSETTS, VERMONT; AND MAINE DEALERS:
VEHICLE EMISSION RECALL - PROOF OF CORRECTION CARD

A Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction card must be filled out for all vehicles registered in California, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine.

California, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine residents who own an affected vehicle will be required to possess a Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction card as evidence of voluntary service campaign completion when they apply for vehicle registration renewal.

WHAT TO DO WITH THE CARD:

Each customer whose vehicle is registered in California, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine must be given a completed Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction card after the voluntary service campaign has been completed.





Note:
This card MUST be completed by the Dealership's Service Manager using a permanent ink pen. A fine point pen is recommended. When filling in the information, copy the information directly from the vehicle, NOT the repair order. ALL INFORMATION MUST BE PRINTED AND NEAT.

DO NOT COMPLETE THE CARD UNLESS THE VOLUNTARY SERVICE CAMPAIGN WORK IS COMPLETED!

The copy of the card indicates the areas to be filled in. Each area must be filled in.

AFFECTED PRODUCTION RANGE:

2001-2003 Rio models produced from 5/4/00 through 10/31/02.
