Service Procedure

Inspection Procedure:

1. Perform a visual inspection of both driver and passengers seat tracks & underneath seat bottom(s) for foreign objects that could interfere with harness routing. Remove & Relocate these objects and continue with this procedure. Notify Customer of these conditions and relocation of these items on the repair order.

2. Connect the Global Diagnostic System (GDS) and verify related diagnostic trouble codes in the SRS/ADU Control Module.

3. If the diagnostic trouble codes in the SRS Control Module are B1378 or B1382 continue with the remainder of the bulletin.

4. If the diagnostic trouble codes in the SRS Control Module are not B1378 or B1382 consult the appropriate 2001 - 2005 Optima Service Manual Airbag Diagnostic Procedure.

Repair Procedure:

1. Record the radio presets (AM/FM) and disconnect the negative battery cable on non=power seat equipped models only.

2. Position the drivers and passengers seat back into the vertical position.

3. Remove the two front (2) trim covers and seat anchor frame nuts.

NOTICE:
When removing the seat frame trim covers, be sure to allow the cover to slide forward completely to avoid damaging the trim piece. Do Not pry the trim cover upwards.

4. Remove the two (2) bolts at the rear of the seat track. Remove the seat assembly from the front two (2) seat frame studs and tilt the seat rearward to gain access to the front of the seat bottom.

5. Disconnect the negative battery cable on power seat equipped models after removing the seat bolts on both the drivers and passenger front seats.

6. If S-04/S-05 has come free of the black connector holder re-install it. Unplug Connector S-08/S-09.

7. Using a body trim tool remove the harness retaining tie wrap from it's factory inserted position to the seat bottom (A). In some instances the harness connector may have come loose from it's factory mounting position in the seat bottom (A) shown here at position (B).

8. Cut the tie wrap from position (B).

9. Mark a new hole relocation point that is 4" (102 mm) horizontally from bottom edge of S-04/S-05 mounting clip and 1" (25 mm) vertically from the edge of the seat flange. Using a 17/64" (7 mm) drill bit and a drill stop drill a hole into the seat bottom.

CAUTION:
caution: Use extreme care to avoid drilling through the seat cushion material and underlying fabric.

10. With S-04/S-05 inserted in the harness connector retainer install the new tie wrap (loosely) on to the S-04 / S-05 wiring conduit and firmly insert the harness retainer into the newly drilled hole below connector S-08/S-09.

Do not tighten the tie wrap at this point!

11. Insure no kinks or bends to the S-05 / S-06 connector harness and tighten the tie wrap trim away the excess. Confirm that the harness retaining tab for the SRS harness is installed completely to the seat bottom assembly.

12. Reconnect Connector(s) S-08/S-09.

13. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

14. Re-install the seat frame assembly on the front body studs and torque the front two (2) nuts (24 - 36 Nm/17 - 26 lb-ft.). Tighten the rear seat frame bolts to (35 - 55 Nm/25 - 40 lb-ft.). Re-install the front and rear seat frame trim pieces.

15. Repeat this procedure on the passenger side seat bottom.

16. Turn the ignition key to the on position and insure the SRS/Airbag Warning lamp is not illuminated after ten (10) seconds.

Reset the clock and radio presets.
