Subject:
Sephia/Spectra and Rio TCM Logic Revision (Trans/Driveline - 007)
Description:
This bulletin provides information related to a logic change in the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for 2001 MY Rio and 1998 through 2001 MY Sephia and Spectra vehicles built after 10/18/00.
On vehicles built before 10/18/00, under certain driving conditions the following DTC's may be stored without a true defect being present: P0705, P0740, P0731, P0732, P0733, and P0734.
TCM's in vehicles built after 10/18/00 use a revised diagnostic routine software to reduce incidence of related DTC's.
The revised TCM should be used to repair affected vehicles experiencing repeat incidence of above mentioned DTC's.
Note:
The part number for the revised TCM's did not change. However, all TCM's currently in PDC stock have the revised logic. When in doubt as to which TCM version a vehicle is equipped with, use the illustration to properly identify the version.
PRELIMINARY:
^ Familiarize yourself with the procedures outlined in TSB, Transmission/Driveline 003. Obtain an A/T diagnosis worksheet and fill it out as you proceed.
^ Check A/T fluid for level and appearance. If fluid is burnt or contaminated, transaxle may have to be replaced per instructions in TSB before proceeding.
^ Check for any (pending) DTC's, record their description and freeze frame data. If any electrical or circuit related DTC's are stored, repair before replacing TCM or before attempting to correct DTC's that indicate system malfunctions.
^ On repeat repairs, always check the vehicle's repair history to determine previous repairs and whether they were effective. Use repair history as required to aid in diagnosis and repair approach.
^ Call Kia Technical Assistance Hot line at 1-800-494-4542 for further information as required.

Service Procedure
INSPECTION:
1. Open drivers door and check production date on FMVSS door label.
2. If vehicle's production date is 10/18/00 or later, vehicle has correct TCM NO TCM REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED.
Note:
If TCM has previously been replaced on this vehicle, it is possible that an older version was installed inadvertently. When in doubt, check TCM version regardless of vehicle production date!
3. If vehicles production date is before 10/18/00, determine TCM version using the illustration on this TSB.
4. If TCM is found to be an early version, proceed with step 5.
Note:
If TCM is the correct version, and DTC's are stored, follow appropriate procedures using DTC specific checklists in Service Manual and/or DTC specific tips/information in scan tool.
REPAIR:
5. Make sure Ignition switch is off and gear selector is in "PARK" position.
6. Locate TCM under left lower dash area. (Sephia/Spectra shown; Rio similar).
7. Rio only: loosen and remove (3) mounting nuts that secure ECM mounting bracket to firewall (these are also used to secure TCM).
8. Rio only: Loosen and remove (1) remaining nut that secures TCM mounting bracket to firewall.
9. Sephia/Spectra: Loosen and remove nuts (2) that secure TCM mounting bracket to firewall.
10. Remove TCM, release wire harness connector locking lever, then disconnect TCM from wire harness. Discard old TCM.
11. Install new TCM in reverse order of removal.
12. Carefully record all performed work on the A/T Diagnosis Worksheet, and file with R.O.
13. Test drive vehicle after warm up, and check for (pending) DTC's. If any (pending) DTC's set during test drive, investigate and correct as required. Use flight record data and follow appropriate procedures using DTC specific checklists in Service Manual and/or DTC specific tips/information in scan tool.
