A/T - MIL ON DTC P0740 Set

VOLUME
2

GROUP
Transmission/Driveline

NUMBER
005

MODEL
Rio

DATE
November 2000

SUBJECT:
TCM Logic Revision

This bulletin provides information related to a logic change in the Rio Transmission Control Module (TCM). On 2001 MY vehicles produced before 8/22/00, the TCM torque converter lock-up logic was over-sensitive, which under certain driving conditions could result in check engine light illumination with a DTC of P0740.

TCMs in vehicles produced after 8/22/00 have revised torque converter lock-up logic to reduce incidence of related DTCs.

This revised TCM should be used to repair affected vehicles experiencing repeat check engine lights with above mentioned DTCs.

Note:
The part number of the revised TCM did not change. However, all TCMs in PDC stock have the revised logic. If in doubt of which TCM a vehicle has, use the illustration for identification.

INSPECTION:

^ Open drivers door and check production date on FMVSS label.

^ If production date is 8/22/00 or later, correct part has already been installed during production - NO ACTION IS REQUIRED.

^ If production date is before 8/22/00, first check whether TSB, Transmission/Driveline 004 needs to be performed, before continuing on to the Replacement Procedure below.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE:

1. Make sure ignition switch is oft, gear selector is in "P" position.

2. Locate ECM and TCM units under left lower dash board area, near kick panel. (Photo taken with dashboard removed for clarity only.)

3. Loosen and remove forward mounting nuts (2) that secure ECM mounting bracket to firewall. (These two forward mounting nuts also secure the TCM bracket.)

4. Loosen top mounting nuts (2) that secure ECM and TCM mounting brackets to tire wall. Top mounting nuts require loosening only, do not remove.

5. Remove ECM bracket from studs on firewall, leaving ECM temporarily suspended by its own harness.

6. Remove TCM with mounting bracket.

7. Note harness attachment to TCM, loosen/ cut wire tie, and unplug connector H01.

8. Plug connector H01 into new TCM, and secure harness with wire tie to new unit.

9. Position TCM and place mounting bracket over forward and top studs in firewall.

10. Position ECM and place mounting bracket over forward and top studs in firewall.

11. Install and tighten top and forward mounting nuts (4).

AFFECTED PRODUCTION RANGE:
All Rio vehicles equipped with automatic transmission produced prior to 8/22/00.
