SUBJECT:
Automatic Transmission Cooler Hose - Service Campaign

This bulletin provides information on a service campaign to install a revised automatic transmission cooler hose on some Rio models.

2001 Rio automatic transmission models produced before 8/11/00 have a transmission cooler hose that may contact the engine cooling fan shroud. Over time, this contact could result in transmission cooler hose damage and fluid leakage due to prolonged contact between the hose and the shroud. Loss of fluid will result in automatic transmission damage.

To correct this condition, a transmission cooler hose with revised bends is being supplied as a service part.

To avoid the potential for automatic transmission damage due to fluid leakage, Kia is conducting a service campaign to install the revised transmission cooler hose on all affected 2001 Rio models in dealer stock and in customer service.

There is no charge to the customer for this repair. Use the procedures in this bulletin to inspect/repair affected Rio models produced before 8/11/00.

!WARNING
Failure to follow procedures, or failure to adhere to Warnings, Cautions and Notices could result in personal injury and/or unnecessary vehicle damage/repairs.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE:

1. Open hood.

2. Check the top of coolant recovery bottle for a red ink mark.

3. If red ink mark exists on the top of the coolant recovery bottle, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.

4. If a red ink mark DOES NOT exist on the top of the coolant recovery bottle, continue on to Repair Procedures.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Disconnect battery cables and hold-down clamp, remove battery, and plastic battery tray.

2. Remove intake air duct by removing bolts (2), nut (1) and loosening hose clamp.

3. Locate return cooler hose.

4. Position a fluid container below hose connections. Slide hose clamp back on hose and disconnect hose from transmission cooler pipe.

CAUTION
A small amount of fluid will leak out when hose is disconnected. Wear eye and skin protection and clean up spills immediately.

5. From below vehicle, repeat for radiator cooler pipe.

6. Remove clamps from old hose and discard hose. Install hose clamps onto new hose. Position clamps for easy access upon installation.

7. Install new hose with red paint mark towards transmission cooler pipe and white paint mark towards radiator cooler pipe. Position hose so that the paint marks on the hose align with corresponding paint marks on cooler pipes.

8. Reinstall intake air duct, connect air intake hose. Secure duct with bolts (2) and nut (1) and tighten hose clamp.

9. Reinstall battery and hold down clamp. Connect positive battery cable, negative battery cable, tighten clamps.

10. Check automatic transmission fluid level, and add correct fluid as needed.
