SUBJECT:
A/T Shift Lever Bushing Spacer
This bulletin provides information on a revised transmission shift lever and bushing spacer on automatic transmission equipped Rio models.
The transmission lever bushing spacer on 2001 Rio models equipped with automatic transmission produced before 7/26/00 may have damage caused by overtightening at assembly. A damaged bushing spacer will result in shift cable bind, which may not allow manual shift lever to fully engage "D" position. If "D" position is not fully engaged, transmission could intermittently go into neutral, causing check engine light to illuminate with DTCs of P0740, P0734, P0732, P0733, P0734, and/or P1500.
Vehicles produced after 7/26/00 incorporate a revised transmission shift lever with a larger bushing spacer to eliminate damage during shift cable assembly.
The new shift lever and bushing spacer should be used to repair affected vehicles experiencing shift cable bind and above mentioned DTCs.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Make sure gear selector is in "P" position.
2. Remove intake air duct bolts (2) and nut (1) and lay duct on top of battery (duct hose does not need to be removed).
3. Locate manual shift lever connected to cable clevis.
4. Remove 6 mm nut and shoulder bolt that attaches clevis to manual shift lever.
5. Loosen nut that attaches manual shift lever to manual shaft.
6. Remove shift lever and bushing spacer and discard.
7. Install new manual shift lever on shaft. Install nut and torque to 24-33 ft-lb.
CAUTION
To avoid damage to the transmission an/or range switch, do not use impact gun and do not exceed specified torque value.
8. Install new bushing spacer into shift lever bushing and re-connect clevis to manual shift lever by installing shoulder bolt and 6 mm nut; ensure shoulder fits into clevis slot, but do not tighten nut at this time.
9. Verify gear selector and manual shift lever are both in Park position.
10. Complete shift cable adjustment by tightening 6 mm nut to 80 to 90 in-lb.
11. Reinstall intake air duct and secure with bolts (2) and nut (1).
12. Verify smooth operation of gear selector and shifter cable.
13. Clear related DTC's as required.
