Fuel Gauge: Description and Operation

Instrument Cluster:

Fuel gauge
Electrical fuel gauge system consists of an electrical panel gauge and a fuel tank sender device. Fuel gauge indicates quantity of fuel in fuel tank only when ignition is turned to "ON" position. When ignition switch is turned to "ACC" or "LOCK" positions, pointer does not point to correct fuel level.

Circuit Operation
The magnetic coils inside the instrument cluster control the pointer of the fuel gauge, whose circuit is grounded permanently through the terminal 1K (B) of C-01. Ground also is provided to the fuel gauge sender, which acts as a variable resistor. When the fuel in the tank is full, the resistance is low, and the pointer indicates full. When the fuel in the tank is low, the resistance is high, and the pointer indicates empty.
