Front Window Regulator Repair
This bulletin provides information relating to window regulator repair on Optima. Some 2001-2002MY Optima models produced before 12/4/01 may experience conditions where the front door glass will not go up or down properly and/or will not stay fully closed. To correct these conditions, use the procedures outlined in this bulletin.
SERVICE NOTES:
^ Verify that vehicle is within affected production range.
^ Service according to condition:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Lower door glass to about one-third from the bottom and remove tweeter speaker by grasping at top and bottom and pulling straight away from door.
2. Remove screw cover and screw from pull handle then remove power window switch assembly. Disconnect window and mirror switches.
3. Disconnect remote trunk switch located under power window switch.
4. Remove screw cover and screw from inside release handle cover, remove cover.
5. Remove two screws at front edge, two screws at rear edge and two screws at bottom edge of door panel, remove door panel.
6. Remove two screws at pull handle bracket and two screws at release handle.
7. Carefully peel back moisture barrier.
8. Remove two glass mounting bolts from window regulator then remove the door glass through the window opening.
9. Disconnect power window motor.
10. Remove four nuts from window regulator and three nuts from power window motor mounting.
11. Remove window regulator from door.
12. Inspect window regulator.
A. If the cable is tangled up on the cable drum, the window regulator must be replaced. Proceed to step 19.
B. If the upper holder is cracked and the cable is properly wound on the cable drum, proceed to step 13.
13. Grind off the regulator upper holder mounting rivet from the back side of the channel.
* NOTICE
Use caution to minimize grinding the channel surface.
14. Use a punch to remove the ground rivet.
15. Apply anti-corrosion primer to cover the grinder marks on the channel. All exposed bare metal must be covered.
16. Install regulator cable onto the new upper holder.
17. Insert the upper holder mounting bolt to the channel and start the nut on the bolt.
18. Align upper holder mounting boss into hole in channel and torque nut to 5-8 lb.ft. (7-11 Nm, 70-110 kg.cm.)
19. Reinstall the window regulator into the door.
20. Re-assemble door trim panel components in reverse order of removal.
21. Verify operation of power window.
AFFECTED PRODUCTION RANGE:
2001 MY and 2002MY Optima with production dates prior to 12/4/01.
