Power Steering Pump: Testing and Inspection
Inspection
1. Check drive belt for wear, cracks and fraying.
Replace if necessary.
Drive belt tension:
A/C and P/S New: 110 - 132 lbs (491 - 589 N)
A/C and P/S Used: 95 - 110 lbs (422 - 491 N)
2. Measure drive belt tension with a tension gauge.
Drive belt deflection
A/C and P/S New: 0.31 - 0.35 inch (8 - 9 mm)
A/C and P/S Used: 0.35 - 0.39 inch (9 - 10 mm)
3. Measure deflection by applying moderate pressure (22 lb [98 N]) midway between pulleys. Adjust if necessary.
Adjustment
1. Loosen pivot bolt (A), locknut (B), and bracket nut (C).
Turn adjusting bolt (D) to set specified deflection.
2. Tighten (A), (B) and (C) to specified torques.
Tightening torque:
Bolt (A): 28 - 38 ft. lbs. (37 - 52 Nm)
Nut (B): 28 - 38 ft. lbs. (37 - 52 Nm)
Nut (C): 28 - 38 ft. lbs. (37 - 52 Nm)
Replacement
1. Loosen pivot bolt (A), bracket nut (C), and locknut (B).
2. Turn adjusting bolt (D) to release belt tension.
3. Remove belt.
4. Install a new drive belt and adjust deflection.
