Battery - Cable Warning
SOURCE: KIA Technician Times Volume 7 Issue 1, 2004TITLE: Battery Cable Warning
APPLIES TO: 98 - 00 Sephia
SERVICE TIP:
When performing automatic transaxle removal/replacement or other repairs or service requiring movement of the battery cable, care must be taken to properly route the cable at the end of the repair service. Battery cables that are mis-routed may cause chaffing to the battery cable insulation. If the insulation is allowed to wear down to the wire core, a short circuit can occur, possibly leading to a fire. Make sure the battery cable is in front of the automatic transaxle dipstick tube and under the shift cable, and routed over the starter and not in contact with the starter solenoid. Make sure the battery cable is not in contact with the transaxle mount bracket, dipstick tube or shift cable. Check that all battery cable conduit and protectors are in place and secure.
Make it a normal part of your repair routine to check battery cable routing when performing engine repairs.
WARNING
Use extreme caution when performing repairs/service that requires movement of the battery cable. There must be NO interference with the transaxle mount bracket, dipstick tube, or shift cable. If necessary, reposition the battery cable to correct any interference. A mis-routed battery cable could cause a fire resulting in severe personal injury, death, and/or unnecessary vehicle damage/repairs.
