Inspection

Check A/T fluid level and appearance. If fluid is burnt or contaminated, transaxle may have to be replaced per instructions in TSB, Transmission/Driveline 003 (Revised), before proceeding.

* NOTICE
Regardless of transaxle replacement, do not release vehicle until the checks and upgrades described below have been completed.

1. Check software version of TCM (if the vehicle was built before 10/18/00), refer to TSB Transmission/Driveline 007.

2. If TCM is correct, proceed to step 4.

Note:
The revised TCM will give current transmission data on 98 - 00 MY Sephias if you enter 01 MY on the Hi-Scan Pro scan tool.

3. If TCM configuration is incorrect, replace per TSB, Transmission/Driveline 007.

4. Check Inhibitor switch date stamp. Replace switch if date stamp is before 01 09 27.

5. Make sure Ignition switch is off; gear selector is in "PARK" position.

6. (Sephia/Spectra) Make sure the harness/connector to the TPS is not being pulled, either continuously or when the engine moves under load. Loosen as required by releasing the harness retainer from one stud on the firewall. If found to be tight, check for damage and pin tension, repair as required.

7. (Rio): Make sure rework in TSB, Transmission/Driveline 004 has been performed if vehicle is built before 7/26/00.

8. Check circuits/wiring harness for inputs/output sensors and signals and repair as required; resistance to be less than 1 ohm.

9. Check and upgrade the following ground connection points: (Refer to ground upgrade procedure)

Rio: grounds 1, 3, 10, JC-04, JC-10

Sephia/Spectra: grounds 8, 10, JC-10

Make sure sufficient heat is applied during soldering to prevent cold solder joints. Make sure ground cables from battery to body and body to transaxle case are clean and tight.

10. Check the operation and adjustment of the A/T gear selector mechanism and control cable. Correct any binding or erratic operation. Readjust, lubricate, or replace per applicable Service Manual.

11. Check following connectors for proper crimp connections, cleanliness, engagement, and pin tension:

Rio connectors: H-01, H-02, H-03, H-04.

Sephia/Spectra connectors: H-01, H-03, H-04, upgrade and correct as required.

12. Install Break Out Box, and set up Hi Scan Pro to monitor and record VSS and Input Turbine Speed signals (per diagnostic checklist for DTC P1500 and P0716 / P0717).

13. Warm up engine and A/T to operating temperature, perform stall test per Service Manual instructions.

14. For P0740 diagnosis, test TCC system with Transaxle/Transmission tester in manual mode (3rd or 4th gear), steady speed, engine RPM over 1600. RPM should drop approximately 200-400 RPM (depending on throttle pressure) when LOCK UP SOLENOID switch is engaged.

* NOTICE
Do not perform TCC operational test at idle. Test is invalid under 1600 RPM due to low fluid pressure, and transaxle may be damaged.

15. Check for drivability concerns, intermittent TPS readings, low power caused by exhaust restriction, low fuel pressure or incorrect cam timing etc., will cause shifting problems.

16. Test-drive vehicle extensively, and check for (pending) DTCs afterwards. During the drive, check for erratic speedometer needle behavior. If speedometer is erratic, diagnose and repair: erratic vehicle speed signal to TCM will cause A/T concerns. Monitor A/T fluid temperature readings using Hi Scan Pro. Set up a flight record session for "any DTC". If (pending) codes set during test drive, investigate and correct as required, using flight record data.

If concern is not resolved, use Transaxle/Transmission tester to determine whether the fault is in the transaxle itself or in the controls/wiring.
