Fuel System - Refueling Difficulties

SOURCE: Kia Technician Times

TITLE: Refueling

APPLIES TO: 98-99 Sephia

SERVICE TIP:

CONDITION

All 1998 and later Sephia models are equipped with Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR). The purpose of this system is to meet EPA/CARB regulations to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

ORVR systems require specific compatibility of vehicle fuel filler necks with service station fuel nozzles.

CAUSE

Approximately 1% to 2% of service stations across the country may have vehicle/nozzle incompatibilities wherein the fuel nozzles prematurely shut off during refueling.

This premature fueling shut-off is being addressed by the fuel nozzle manufacturers and service stations. In addition, the Kia factory is studying possible revisions to the vehicle fuel filler neck to improve compatibility with marginal fuel nozzles.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

If you have customers with 1998 and later Sephias experiencing fueling problems, our recommendations are:
- Try a different service station.
- Try rotating fuel nozzle counter-clockwise 60° to 90° in vehicle filler neck or try pulling fuel nozzle out from fuel filler neck approximately one inch and continue refueling.
