Headlight/Combination Light Assembly
Exterior lights consist of six lighting systems: headlights, turn-signal lights, parking lights, hazard lights, brake lights, and license plate lights (rear only). Six systems include left and right headlight and combination light assemblies, left and right rear combination light assemblies, a rear high-mounted brake light assembly, and two license plate light assemblies (for rear license only). All lights are powered by 12-volt electrical system and are controlled/operated by driver.
Headlight/Combination Light Assembly (Front)
Headlight/combination light assembly is aerodynamically shaped to match contours of body. Light assembly is attached to body with two bolts.
This light assembly contains three bulbs. One bulb functions as headlight, others as combination light. Headlight bulb is of dual-filament halogen type.
Dual filaments are energized separately to provide high and low beams. An O-ring seals bulb installation to prevent foreign matter from entering headlight assembly. Bulb can be removed/installed from engine compartment without removing light assembly.
Each headlight can be adjusted to move beam up, down, left or right. Two adjustment screws for each headlight assembly are reached through holes in body structure, directly above headlight assembly. Inboard screw adjusts left/right headlight beam, and outboard screw adjusts headlight beam up/down.
Front combination light contains two bulbs. One bulb functions as hazard/turn signal light, and other as position/parking light.
Hazard and turn signal bulb filament is controlled by combination switch on steering column.
Headlights
Battery voltage is applied at all times from the HEAD fuse to the light switch. With the light switch in HEAD and the dimmer switch in the LO position, battery voltage is directed through the light switch to the left and right LO beam filaments. The headlight LO beams illuminate. With the dimmer switch in the HIGH position, battery voltage is directed through the light switch to the left and switch to the left and right HIGH beam filaments, and the HIGH beam indicator. The HIGH beams and the HIGH beam indicator illuminate. When the flash-to-pass switch is activated, battery voltage is directed through the switch to the left and right HIGH beam filaments and the HIGH beam indicator. The HIGH beams and the HIGH beam indicator illuminate.
Combination Light Assembly (Rear)
Rear combination light assembly is aerodynamically shaped to follow body contours. Lens is three-colored: amber (hazard/turn signal), translucent (backup) and red (tail/brake). Rear combination light assembly contains three bulbs. Two bulbs are single-filament and are used in hazard/turn signal and backup light circuits. Third bulb is a dual filament bulb; one filament functions as brake light and other as tail light. A plastic bulb holder mounts three lamps and associated wiring. Bulb holder can be removed from inside vehicle for bulb replacement.
Brake light bulb is turned on/off by a brake light switch mounted near brake pedal and actuated by movement of brake pedal. Refer to Brake System, for adjustment of brake (stop) light switch.
Backup light is turned on/off by a switch mounted on transaxle. When transaxle is shifted into reverse gear, switch is closed to turn on backup lights.
Hazard and turn signal bulb is controlled by combination switch installed on steering column.
"Lights On" Warning Chime
Battery voltage is applied through the TAIL LH fuses to the "Lights ON" input of the electronic time control module when the light switch is in PARK or HEAD. When any door is opened, its door switch applies ground to the "Door open input. If the "Door open input is grounded, and battery voltage is present at the "Lights ON" input, then a warning chime will sound to alert an exiting driver that the lights were left ON.
