SOURCE: Kia Technician Times
TITLE: DTC P0740
APPLIES TO: 98 Sephia
SERVICE TIP:
CONDITION
Repeat occurrences of check engine light illumination where a code P0740 - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction, was retrieved.
CAUSE
This condition is sometimes caused by a damaged or missing turbine shaft O-ring. If this O-ring is missing or damaged, the resulting fluid leakage past the O-ring affects the transaxle lock-up function, causing the DTC P0740 to be stored in the TCM memory.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
2. Remove the torque converter from the transaxle.
3. Locate the turbine shaft and check to see if the O-ring is missing or damaged.
4. If the O-ring is missing or damaged, install a new O-ring (P/N MFU50-19-202A) on the turbine shaft.
NOTICE
Lubricate the O-ring with ATF or petroleum jelly prior to installing the torque converter to prevent damage to the O-ring.
5. Install the torque converter into the transaxle and install the transaxle into the vehicle.
6. Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
