SOURCE: Kia Technician Times
TITLE: Rear Shock Clunking/Squeaking
APPLIES TO: 98 Sephia
SERVICE TIP:
CONDITION
Some 1998 vehicles have exhibited a "knocking," "clunking" or "squeaking" noise emanating from the rear of the vehicle during cornering.
CAUSE
This condition is caused by the rear strut upper mount coming in contact with the body, typically when cornering.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. Remove the rear seat back and parcel shelf.
2. Check that the top of the strut does not contact any of the surrounding sheet metal.
3. If necessary, loosen the two mounting nuts and reposition the strut.
4. Tighten the nuts to 17-22 lb-ft (22-28 Nm) of torque.
