Clockspring Assembly Service
NOTICE
The clockspring connector is part of the combination switch and is not serviced as a separate part.
Removal
1. Remove the Driver Air Bag Module.
2. Remove the steering wheel nut. Mark the steering wheel and steering shaft so that their relative positions will be known during re-installation.
3. Using a suitable wheel puller, remove the steering wheel.
4. Remove the three combination switch retaining screws, disconnect the three connectors and remove the combination switch.
INSTALLATION
1. Temporarily install the steering wheel and turn the front wheels so that they are pointing straight ahead.
NOTICE
An alignment pin is used to aid in the alignment of the clockspring connector when installing the steering wheel onto the steering column. An alignment pin is provided with a new combination switch, but a substitute pin will be needed when re-aligning an original clockspring. The substitute pin should be .12 in (3mm) in diameter and at least 3.0 in (76mm) long.
2. Install the combination switch and retain with three screws. Connect the three combination switch connectors.
Torque: 8 in-lbs
3. Rotate the center portion of the clockspring connector clockwise until it stops. Proceed to rotate the center counterclockwise 2 3/4 turns and align the arrow on the center decal with the arrow on the housing.
4. While holding the arrows aligned, insert the alignment pin into the hole on the front face of the center portion until it engages in the hole located on the back side of the housing. The insertion depth is about 7/8 in (2cm).
5. Re-install the steering wheel by lining up the marks applied during removal. The alignment pin passes through the oblong hole in the steering wheel that is located immediately above the hole for the steering shaft. Install the steering wheel nut finger tight.
6. Remove the alignment pin and tighten the nut.
