Rear Window Glass


Removal and Installation





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove in the order shown in the figure.
3. Install in the reverse order of removal.

REMOVAL
1. Remove the rear header trim, rear pillar trim, and rear package tray.
2. Disconnect the rear window defogger connectors.
3. Remove the rear window weatherstrip, rear window rubber moulding, and moulding trim piece.





4. Remove the glass by separating it from the sealant. Use a commercial power tool, a manually operated removal tool, or the following procedure.
a. Use an awl to make a hole in the sealant.
b. Pass the end of a 16 in (40 cm) length of piano wire through the hole, and then attach bars to both ends of the wire.
c. Two people should hold the bars, one inside and one outside the vehicle, and "saw" the sealant around the glass.
5. Remove the glass from the body.

NOTICE
- Cut along the border between the glass and the sealant.
- If too much heat develops, the piano wire may break. Cool it occasionally or don't work in one place too long.





- If the glass is not to be reused, a tool like that shown that the figure is faster than piano wire.

INSTALLATION





1. Use a knife to trim excess sealant from the body. Leave a layer about 0.04-0.08 in (1-2 mm) thick.
2. Thoroughly clean a 2.0 in (5 cm) wide area around the perimeter of the glass, and from the corresponding area on the body.





3. Bond the sealant dam along the perimeter of the glass 1/4 in (7 mm) from the outside edge. Allow the dam bond to cure completely before continuing.





4. Apply primer with a brush to the perimeter of the glass and the body, and allow it to dry for 20 to 30 minutes.

CAUTION
Do not to allow dirt, water, oil, etc. to come in contact with the coated surfaces, and do not touch it with your hand.





5. Install the spacers at the positions shown in the figure.

NOTICE
Replace any defective spacers with new ones.





6. When the primer has dried, apply a 7/16 in (11 mm) thick bead of sealant 1/4 in (7 mm) from the periphery of the glass using the sealant gun.

NOTICE
- Cut the nozzle of the repair seal cartridge as illustrated Th the figure.
- If necessary, smooth the repair seal to correct any irregularities.





7. Attach the rear window glass to the body.

NOTICE
Keep The side windows open until the repair seal hardens enough to prevent pressure from being exerted on the rear window if a door is closed quickly

Align the marks on the glass with the V-notches on the spacers.





Hardening time of repair sealant:





8. Remove excess and/or add repair sealant where necessary.





9. Check for water leaks. If a leak is found, wipe the water off completely before adding sealant.
10. After checking for water leakage, replace the rear window weatherstrip, rear window rubber moulding, and moulding trim piece.
11. Reconnect the rear window defogger connectors.
12. Install the rear header trim, rear pillar trim, rear package tray and rear window mouldings.
