Front Window Glass

Removal and Installation





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove in the numbered order shown in the figure.
3. Install in the reverse order of removal.

REMOVAL





1. Remove the rearview mirror, sunvisor, front header trim and front pillar trim.
2. Remove the front window mouldings.





3. Remove the glass by separating the glass from the sealant using a commercial power or manually operated removal tool, or use the following procedure:
1. Use an awl to make a hole in the sealant.
2. Pass the end ot a 16 in (40 cm) length of piano wire through the hole, and attach suitable grips to both ends.





4. Two people should hold the grips, one inside and one outside the vehicle, and then "saw" the sealant from around the glass.
5. Remove the glass from the body.

NOTICE





When cutting the sealant from The bottom of the glass place a plastic sheet under The piano wire where it touches the instrument panel. Move The plastic along as The sealant is cut.

NOTICE
- Cut along the border between The glass and the sealant.
- If too much heat develops, The piano wire may break. Cool it occasionally or don't work in one place too long.
- If The glass is not to be reused, a tool like that shown in The figure is faster than piano wire.

INSTALLATION





1. Use a knife to smoothly trim the sealant on the body. Leave a layer about 0.04 to 0.08 in (1 or 2 mm) thick.
2. Carefully clean a 2.0 in (5 cm) wide area around the perimeter of the glass and the corresponding area on the body.





3. Bond a dam near the perimeter of the glass 11/4 in (7 mm) from the outside edge. Allow bond to cure completely before proceeding.





4. Apply primer with a brush to the perimeter of the glass and the body, and allow it to dry for 20 to 30 minutes.

CAUTION
Do not allow dirt, water, oil, etc., to come in contact with the coated surfaces. Do not touch it with your hand.





5. Install the spacers and clips at the positions shown in the figure.

NOTICE
Replace any defective clips with new ones.





6. When the primer has dried, apply a 7/16 in (11 mm) thick x 1/4 in (7 mm) wide bead of repair sealant around the perimeter of the glass using the sealant gun.

NOTICE
- Cut the nozzle of the sealant cartridge as illustrated the figure.
- If necessary smooth the repair seal to correct any irregularities.





7. Attach the front glass to the body.

NOTICE
Keep the door windows open until the repair seal hardens to prevent pressure from being exerted on the front glass if the door is closed quickly.

- Align the marks on the glass with the V-notch on each spacer.
- Curing time of repair seal:





8. Remove excess and/or add repair sealant where necessary.
9. Check for water leaks. If a leak is found, wipe the water off completely before adding sealant.
10. After checking for water leakage, replace the pillar trim, cowl panel, cowl grill, wipers, etc..
11. Install the inside rearview mirror, sunvisor, front header trim, front pillar trim and front window mouldings.
