NOTICE:
- Secure the joint in a vise with protective material (such as brass or aluminum plates) on the jaws.
- Be careful that dust or other foreign material does not enter the joint while the work is being performed.
- Do not disassemble the outer ball joint (Birfield type).
- Do not wash the joint unless it is being disassembled.
DISASSEMBLY
NOTE: Disassemble in the order shown.
1. Pry up the locking clip of the transaxle-side boot retention band with a screwdriver.
2. Remove the band with pliers.
3. Slide the boot along the shaft to expose the joint.
4. Mark the CV joint housing and the shaft for proper reassembly.
5. Remove the outer ring.
6. Mark the shaft and tripod joint for proper reassembly.
7. Remove the snap ring with snap-ring pliers.
NOTICE: Do not damage the needle bearings.
8. Drive the tripod joint from the shaft with a bar and a hammer.
9. Wrap the splines of the shaft with tape to prevent damaging the boot.
10. Slide the boot off of the shaft.
NOTICE: Do not remove the dynamic damper unless necessary.
11. Pry up the locking clip of the damper retention band with a screwdriver.
12. Remove the band with pliers.
13. Remove the dynamic damper.
NOTICE: Do not remove the boot from the outer joint unless necessary.
14. Pry up the locking clip of the outer boots' small and large retention bands with a screwdriver, or similar tool.
15. Remove both bands with pliers.
16. Cover the splines with tape and remove the boot.
INSPECTION
1. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
ASSEMBLY
NOTE: Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.
NOTICE: The boots are different for the inner and outer joints.
A: 3.26 inch (82.8 mm)
B: 3.36 inch (85.5 mm)
1. Cover the splines of the transaxle end with tape.
2. Install the inner dust boot.
NOTICE:
- Always use new bands.
- The bands should be installed so that their pointed ends initially point in the forward direction of rotation.
3. Install the dynamic damper and band.
4. Fold the band back by pulling on the end of it with pliers.
5. Lock the end of the band by bending its locking clip.
6. Install the outer boot.
NOTICE: Do not damage the bearing.
7. Align the marks and carefully install the tripod joint with a drift and a hammer.
8. Install the snap ring with snap-ring pliers.
9. Apply the grease included in the rebuild kit to the tripod joint, outer ring, and boot.
10. Install the outer ring.
11. If the outer boot was removed, fill it with the quantity of grease specified.
Transaxle end: 5.29 oz. (150g)
Wheel end: 4.23 oz. (120g)
NOTICE:
- Be sure the boots are not damaged.
- Carefully lift up the small end of the boots to release any trapped air.
12. Install the boot retention bands.
13. Fold the bands back, and pull on the ends with pliers.
14. Lock the ends of the bands by bending the locking clips.
