Premain Control Valve Body Overhaul
NOTICE:
- Each valve should slide in/out under its own weight.
- When a valve will not slide in/out under its own weight, depending on the valve, push it out with a wire or replace the valve body open-side down and lightly tap it with a soft hammer.
- If a valve surface or bore is scratched or damaged, replace the control valve body.
- Do not drop or lose the valves or internal parts.
- Before assembly, make sure all parts are thoroughly clean.
- Apply ATF to all parts and bores.
- Note the proper direction of the valves and internal parts.
- Do not reuse any part that has been dropped.
- Wrap a screwdriver or rod with tape before using it to insert a valve.
DISASSEMBLY
1. Disassemble in the order shown.
INSPECTION
1. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
2. Measure the spring free lengths.
3. If not within specification, replace the spring(s).
Lockup Control Spring:
Outer Diameter - 0.201 inch (5.1 mm)
Free Length - 1.185 inch (30.1 mm)
Number Of Coils - 21.5
Wire Diameter - 0.022 inch (0.55 mm)
Converter Relief Spring:
Outer Diameter - 0.339 inch (8.6 mm)
Free Length - 2.693 inch (68.4 mm)
Number Of Coils - 27.5
Wire Diameter - 0.057 inch (1.2 mm)
2-3 Shift Spring:
Outer Diameter - 0.291 inch (7.4 mm)
Free Length - 1.441 inch (36.6 mm)
Number Of Coils - 12.0
Wire Diameter - 0.031 inch (0.8 mm)
Bypass Spring:
Outer Diameter - 0.193 inch (4.9 mm)
Free Length - 1.201 inch (30.5 mm)
Number Of Coils - 23.0
Wire Diameter - 0.022 inch (0.55 mm)
ASSEMBLY
NOTE: Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.
1. Insert the bypass spring, bypass valve, and stop plug. Secure them with the stop pin.
2. Insert the 2-3 shift spring, 2-3 shift valve, and plug. Secure them with the stop pin.
3. Insert the converter relief valve and converter relief spring. Secure them with the spring retainer.
4. Insert the lock-up control spring, lock-up control valve, and stop plug. Secure them with the stop pin.
