2-4 Brake Band Overhaul

PREPARATION





Special Service Tool Required





DISASSEMBLY
1. Disassemble in the order shown, in the image.

INSPECTION
2-4 Brake Band





1. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
2. Check the 2-4 brake band for wear and burnt friction material.

Servo Return Spring





1. Measure the servo return spring free length and check for deformation.

Free length: 1.703 inch (43.25 mm)

2. If not within specification, replace the servo return spring.

Orifice Check Spring

NOTICE: Do not compress the spring when measuring it with vernier calipers.





1. Measure the spring free length.

Outer Diameter - 0.295 inch (7.5 mm)
Free Length - 1.291 inch (32.8 mm)
Number Of Coils - 10
Wire Diameter - 0.024 inch (0.6 mm)

2. If not as specified, replace the spring.

ASSEMBLY

NOTICE: Use a piece of wire to secure the 2-4 brake band so that it is not damaged by being allowed to fully expand.

1. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.





2. Install the orifice valve, orifice check spring, and orifice holder as shown.





3. Install the orifice assembly and washer to the transaxle case.

4. Tighten the orifice assembly using a hexagonal wrench.

Tightening torque: 29-39 ft. lbs. (40-53 Nm)





5. Apply ATF to new D-rings and install them to the servo piston.

D-ring inner diameter:
Piston stem side - 2.303 inch (58.5 mm)
Servo Retainer Side - 1.157 inch (29.4 mm)





6. Insert the piston stem into the servo piston and secure it with a new spring clip.





7. Apply ATF to the new O-ring and install it to the servo retainer.

O-ring inner diameter: 2.587 inch (65.7 mm)





8. Assemble the servo piston and servo retainer.

NOTICE: Do not install the servo piston and retainer into the transaxle case at this time.
