Air Bag Module (Passenger Side)
PASSENGER AIR BAG MODULE SERVICE
WARNING
Handling the air bag improperly may cause it to deploy, which may cause serious injury. Read SERVICE WARNINGS before servicing.
CAUTION
Never service wiring or electrical components when any air bag is connected.
Passenger Air Bag Module Removal
1. Remove the two screws at the bottom corners of the glove box and remove the glove box.
2. Remove the four screws and remove the glove box upper trim panel.
3. Remove the one air duct mounting bracket screw located slightly above and to the right of the thermostat.
4. Push the air duct towards the cowl to gain access to the two front air bag module mounting bolts.
5. Remove the two front and two rear mounting bolts.
6. Disconnect the passenger air bag module connector from the wiring harness.
* NOTICE
The orange and blue connectors are exclusive to the air bag-SRS harness. The connector half with female pins consists of two separate shells; one for the air bag-SRS, the other for the horn. These two shells are mechanically configured to provide the blue air bag-SRS shell with two retention latches, reducing the possibility of an unwanted separation during a collision. The blue air bag-SRS shell also contains a safety feature that shunts its two pins together when it is disconnected. This feature helps prevent unintentional air bag deployment When disconnecting the two shells, it is necessary to remove the orange shell first Reconnection is the reverse order of disconnection.
WARNING
^ Do not disassemble any of the actual air bag-SRS components. Disassembly of components can render the system inoperative, which may result in serious injury or death in the event of an accident. Never attempt to disassemble or repair the air bag modules.
^ Any attempt to adapt, re-use, or install an air bag module or its components in another vehicle may result in serious injury or death to the vehicle occupants in the event of an accident.
^ Do not cut or otherwise remove the air bag module connector. The connector contains a safety shunt and disabling that shunt could cause unplanned deployment, which may cause severe personal injury or death.
^ A live (undeployed) air bag may accidently deploy during handling. When carrying a live air bag module, point the trim cover away from your body to lessen the chance of injury in case of accidental deployment. Never carry the module by its wiring or connectors.
^ Always place live air bag modules face up to lessen motion of the module in case of accidental deployment. Keep the area clear of parts, tools and debris.
^ Never place items on or above the trim cover of a live air bag module. In case of accidental deployment, such items may cause serious injury or death.
7. Depress the two side spring latches (located behind and at the bottom corners of the plastic module trim) and remove the module from the instrument panel.
8. If necessary, dispose of air bag module. Refer to Air Bag Deployment and Disposal.
Passenger Air Bag Installation
CAUTION
Take care not to pinch the wiring harness with other vehicle parts during reassembly. Kinks in the harness will fatigue the wires and may lead to intermittent circuit failure.
1. Install the passenger air bag module and verify that the side latch engages properly.
2. Install the four mounting bolts.
Torque: 18 - 32 ft-lbs (24-42 Nem)
3. Couple the air bag connector to the vehicle wiring hamess. Refer to notice in Passenger Air Bag Removal above.
4. Reposition the air duct and install the mounting bracket screw.
5. Install the glove box upper trim panel with four mounting screws.
6. Install the glove box with two mounting bolts.
7. Perform Diagnosis. Refer to Diagnosis (Multi-point) or Diagnosis (Single-point).
