Recall Campaign: Sephia Evaporative Fuel Vapor Hose Replacement

This bulletin provides information related to a recall for 1996 and 1997 Sephia evaporative emissions fuel vapor hoses. Some Sephia models equipped with 1.8 liter BPD engine with production dates between 7/1/95 and 11/4/96 have evaporative fuel vapor hoses that may have developed cracks. Cracked hoses could result in one or more of the following:

^ Setting a "Check Engine" light with DTC code of P0440, P0442 or P0455.

^ Failure of vehicle to pass a vehicle inspection or registration renewal emission test.

^ Release of volatile organic compounds (VOC's) into the atmosphere.

To correct this situation, Kia is recalling all affected 1996 and 1997 Sephia models to replace the evaporative fuel vapor hoses.

* NOTICE
^ There is no charge to the customer for this repair. Under applicable law you may not sell or otherwise deliver any affected 1996 or 1997 Sephia until the evaporative fuel hoses have been replaced.

^ For California dealers, this recall is subject to the State of California Registration Renewal/Emission Recall Enforcement Program implemented in 1992. Involved vehicles must have the recall service completed before registration renewal.

INSPECTION:

1. Open fuel filler door and check for campaign completion sticker. If sticker is present, campaign has already been done - NO ACTION IS REQUIRED.

2. If campaign completion sticker is. not present, continue on to Repair Procedures.

!WARNING
Failure to follow procedures, or failure to adhere to Warnings, Cautions and Notices. could result in personal injury an/or unnecessary vehicle damage/repairs. Fuel vapors are highly flammable Death or serious injury could result if they are ignited. Make sure there are no open flames or cigarette smoking in the area of the repair. Adequate ventilation is necessary to prevent a buildup of fumes which could ignite, causing fire or explosion.

REPAIR DESCRIPTION:





The repair consists of replacement of all evaporative fuel vapor hoses and pipes at the fuel tank with improved materials and hose routing. The illustrations show the new parts to be installed.





For California Dealers:
For vehicles sold in California, a supplied Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction Form must be completed and given to each owner upon completion of the recall service for owner use as proof during renewal of vehicle registration.
