Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair






REMOVAL
1. Block the vehicle's front wheels.
2. Release the parking brake.
3. If the front parking cable (underneath the vehicle) is to be replaced, remove the rear console.
4. Remove the adjuster nut clip and adjuster nut.
5. Remove two mounting bolts holding the lever assembly to the floor pan.
6. Remove the screw holding the parking brake switch to the lever assembly.

WARNING: IF THE VEHICLE HAS RECENTLY BEEN RUNNING, THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WILL BE EXTREMELY HOT.

7. Remove the return spring and unlatch the two rear parking cables from the front parking cable's balance bar.
8. Pull the front parking brake cable out of the rubber feed-through.
9. If one or both of the rear parking brake cables are to be removed, remove the retaining clip attaching the forward end of the rear cable to the vehicle floor pan.
10. Remove the three bolts that attach each rear parking cable to the floor pan and trailing arm.
11. Remove the cable-to-backing plate retaining clip.
12. Disconnect the cable end from the rear brake shoe and pull the cable out of the backing plate.

INSTALLATION
1. Feed the rear parking cable end into the backing plate and install its retaining clip.
2. Attach the rear parking cable end to the rear brake shoe and install the brake assembly.
3. Attach the rear parking cable to the trailing arm and floor pan with three bolts. Tighten bolts to specification.
- Tightening torque: 12-18 ft. lbs. (16-24 Nm).
4. Attach the forward end of the rear parking cable to floor pan with a push-on clip.
5. If the front cable assembly was removed, insert its forward end through grommet and connect the rear brake cable to the front parking cable's balance bar.
6. From inside the vehicle, insert the front cable end into the parking brake lever assembly and install the cable adjuster nut.
7. Fasten the cable adjuster with its clip.
8. If removed, install the parking brake switch with its screw.
9. Attach the lever assembly to the floor pan with two bolts.
- Tighten the bolts 12-18 ft. lbs. (16-24 Nm).
10. Adjust the parking brake.
11. Install the rear console.
