Transmission Removal






NOTE: Remove in the order shown in the image.

PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (first) and the positive battery cable (second).
2. To remove the air cleaner assembly, disconnect the hose from the intake manifold, the MAP sensor connector and the three mounting bolts.
3. Remove the two bolts and the battery hold down and then remove the battery.
4. Remove three bolts, one nut and the battery tray.
5. Remove the seven bolts (four to the body, three to the transaxle) and remove #4 engine mount.
6. Remove one bolt and disconnect the hydraulic hose support bracket from transaxle mount.
7. Disconnect the EGR to the exhaust manifold nut.
8. Disconnect the two EGR-to-intake manifold bolts.
9. Disconnect the bolt from the EGR bracket and remove the EGR tube.
10. Disconnect the back-up light connector.
11. Remove one bolt and the back-up light connector support bracket.
12. Disconnect the ground strap from the top of the transaxle (one bolt).
13. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector from the right side of the transaxle.
14. Disconnect the neutral position switch connector.





15. Remove four transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts (two top, two side).
16. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
17. Place a drain pan under the transaxle drain plug.
18. Remove the transaxle drain plug and allow the transaxle oil to fully drain.
19. Remove both front wheels (four lug nuts each).
20. Remove the two driver's side wheel well splash shields (seven bolts).
21. Remove five bolts (two top, two bottom, one center) and the intake support bracket.
22. Remove three starter bolts and pull the starter away.
23. Remove the four catalytic converter bolts (two front, two rear) and remove the catalytic converter.
24. Remove five engine oil pan-to-transaxle bolts.





25. Remove both the right and left tie rod ends from the steering knuckles by removing one cotter pin and one nut each.





26. Remove both stabilizer end links by removing two nuts, four washers, four bushings, one sleeve and one bolt from each side.
27. Remove the pinch bolt and nut from both right and left ball joints.





28. Disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckles by prying them loose.





29. Gently pry the left driveshaft from the transaxle.
30. Remove the joint shaft support mount from the cylinder block.
31. Slide the joint shaft/right driveshaft assembly out of the transaxle.
32. Remove two nuts from the #2 engine mount-to-mounting member.
33. Remove two nuts from the #1 engine mount-to-mounting member.
34. Remove one bolt and nut, and disconnect shift control rod from the transaxle.
35. Remove one nut and disconnect extension bar from the transaxle.





36. Support the engine with a transverse support bar.





37. Support the transaxle with a transaxle jack or suitable floor jack.
38. Remove the four engine mounting member-to-chassis bolts (two front) and nuts (two rear). Remove the mounting member.
39. Remove four front engine mount (#2) bolts from the transaxle.
40. Separate the clutch release cylinder from the transaxle by removing the two bolts.
41. Slowly lower the drivetrain, allowing the transaxle to tilt toward the ground.
42. Gently sparate the transaxle from the engine and remove the unit through the wheel well.
