Differential: Service and Repair

CAUTION: Do not remove the bearing inner race if not necessary.

1. Before disassembly, inspect the backlash of the side gear, Refer to Pre-Inspection.
2. Disassemble in the order shown, Refering to the Disassembly Notes.
3. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.
4. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, Refering to the Assembly Notes.

PRE-INSPECTION

Backlash Of Side Gear And Pinion Gear
Measure the backlash by using the following procedure:
1. Install the left driveshaft and joint shaft into the differential assembly.





2. Support the driveshafts on V-blocks, as shown.
3. Measure the backlash of both pinion gears.

Backlash: 0.002 - 0.006 inch (0.05 - 0.15 mm)

DISASSEMBLY NOTES

Differential Bearing Inner Race (Side Opposite Ring Gear)

CAUTION: Hold the differential case with one hand so that it does not fall.





1. Remove the bearing inner race using the SST (or equivalent).

Differential Bearing Inner Race (Ring Gear Side)

NOTICE: Use pads in file vise.





1. Remove the bearing inner race using the SST (or equivalent).





Inspection

NOTICE: If the differential case is replaced, adjust the bearing preload.

1. Inspect all parts and repair or replace as necessary.





2. Inspect the ring gear for wear and cracks.

Differential Bearing Inner Race

NOTICE:
- When replacing the bearing inner race, replace the bearing outer race and inner race as a set.
- If the bearing is replaced, adjust the bearing preload.





1. Inspect for wear and rough rotation.





ASSEMBLY NOTES

Speedometer Drive Gear





1. Install the speedometer drive gear as shown.

Differential Bearing Inner Race (Side Opposite Ring Gear)

1. Install the speedometer drive gear.





2. Install the new differential bearing inner race with the SST (or equivalent).

Differential Bearing Inner Race (Ring Gear Side)





1. Install the new differential bearing inner race with the SST (or equivalent).

Roll Pin
1. Install the side gears, pinion gears and pinion shaft.





2. Install a new roll pin to hold the pinion shaft as shown.

NOTE: Measure the backlash after assembly.
